Most cargo for Trinidad sails to the Port of Port of Spain, the country's main port, with Point Lisas in the industrial south handling larger and heavier loads. A broker files the entry in ASYCUDA World, and from there your goods travel on to your address, whether that's the capital, the east-west corridor through Tunapuna and Arima, the central belt around Chaguanas and Cunupia, or San Fernando and the south. For Tobago, goods clear at the Port of Scarborough, reached by the inter-island ferry from Port of Spain or by direct freight. Cargo is sometimes transhipped through a regional hub, so allow roughly three to five weeks door to door.

If you're a returning national, a citizen or former citizen who has lived abroad for at least five years and is coming home to live, you can bring your used household effects in free of customs duty and VAT, provided you've owned and used them for at least a year and import them within two months of your return. There's full relief up to a CIF value of 250,000 Trinidad and Tobago dollars; above that, the excess attracts duty, VAT and a special tax. You also get a one-time vehicle concession, with the duty waiver rising from 25 to 90 per cent depending on how long you've owned the car, plus relief from VAT and motor vehicle tax. It's arranged through a customs broker and a letter to the Comptroller of Customs. For other shipments, goods may attract import duty under the CARICOM tariff, up to 20 per cent, plus VAT at 12.5% on the landed value. A broker files the entry in ASYCUDA World, and your vetted partner handles the paperwork either way.
