There are two ways to ship a car. In a container, the car is secured inside a 20ft or 40ft box, on its own or sharing with your household goods, the best protection and the usual choice for a valued car. By roll-on roll-off, the car is driven onto a vehicle ship and driven off at the other end, often cheaper for a standard runaround. The islands drive on the left, the same as the UK, so a right-hand-drive car suits the roads.

A car clears on its own paperwork. You'll need the logbook or title proving ownership, a purchase invoice or proof of value, and the bill of lading for the voyage. A broker files the customs declaration in ASYCUDA World. A car is dutiable, with the rate depending on engine size and value, plus VAT at 12.5% on the landed value. Returning nationals get a one-time vehicle concession, with the duty waiver rising the longer they've owned the car, plus relief from VAT and motor vehicle tax on a qualifying private car.

Your car clears at the Port of Port of Spain. A broker files the entry in ASYCUDA World, and any duty, VAT at 12.5% and motor vehicle tax are worked out on the landed value, unless it comes in under the returning-national concession. Once cleared, you collect it or your partner arranges delivery, with an inter-island leg for Tobago. Your partner tells you what's due before the car ships, so there are no surprises at the port.
