Movers working the Silesian border treat this as a local job

Katowice sits around a hundred kilometres from Ostrava and Krakow under two hundred. Prague is considerably further from either. If your Czech destination is in the east of the country, a move from southern Poland is one of the shortest international removals there is.

The clearest illustration sits on the border itself. Cesky Tesin and Cieszyn are one town divided by a river, with a Czech side and a Polish side and a bridge between them. Crews working the Ostrava area cross it routinely, and an address on the far bank is a short local run rather than an international undertaking.

That is the useful thing to know about this journey. What looks on a map like a move between two countries is, for the towns near the border, closer to a move between two districts.

Further out the arithmetic changes. Warsaw or Gdansk to Prague is a genuine long haul where the driving dominates the price. Give your mover the two towns rather than the two countries.

Short journeys in the east

The Moravian-Silesian region and Polish Silesia sit either side of the border and share a great deal: heavy industry, dense population and roads built for freight. Ostrava, Havirov, Karvina and Cesky Tesin on the Czech side all fall inside the same travel to work area, which our Ostrava removals page covers as one region.

From Katowice, Bielsko-Biala or Rybnik, a delivery into that area is a short drive on good roads. Fixed costs dominate rather than mileage, which means a small load is worth moving and cutting your household may not save what you expect.

Removal companies covering the border zone quote it as short work, so check the minimum charge before you start selling furniture. See small moves and boxes.

Long journeys from the north

Warsaw, Gdansk, Poznan and Wroclaw are a different proposition, particularly to Prague or Plzen in the west. Here the driving is the biggest line in the quote and the usual long haul rules apply.

Shared space on a part load saves proportionally more on these journeys, and the waiting window matters more because fewer vehicles run the length of the country than run across the border in the south.

🚫 No customs on the goods

Free circulation, in both directions

Both countries are EU member states, so personal belongings cross without a customs entry. No import declaration, no duty relief claim, no EORI number, no proof of address for clearance. Council Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009 applies to goods entering the EU from outside it and neither end of this journey is outside it.

What still needs attention is the same short list as any intra-EU move. A vehicle must be registered in its new country, and the Czech electronic motorway vignette applies from the first journey: see car transport. Pets need documents and vaccination records. Firearms, including deactivated and antique pieces, have their own regime in both countries.

Residence follows your nationality rather than your last address. The full position is on removals to the Czech Republic from Europe.

Access at both ends

Generally kind on this journey, and any international moving quote should reflect that rather than pricing in problems that do not arise here. Both Polish Silesia and the Czech side are largely post war and prefabricated housing with lifts and room to park a vehicle, rather than the tight historic stairwells that make central Prague expensive. Measure the narrowest turn and the lift car anyway, because the exceptions are the older town centres.

Questions people ask about moving across the Silesian border

Is Ostrava closer to Poland than to Prague?

In practical terms yes. Katowice sits roughly a hundred kilometres from Ostrava and Krakow under two hundred, while Prague is a good deal further. If your Czech destination is in the east of the country, a move from southern Poland is one of the shortest international removals available anywhere.

Do I need customs paperwork?

None for your household goods. Both countries are in the EU, so personal belongings move in free circulation with no import declaration, no duty relief claim and no EORI number. Vehicles, pets and firearms still have their own requirements at the destination.

What about Cesky Tesin and Cieszyn?

They are one town divided by a river and an international border, with a Czech side and a Polish side. Deliveries there are entirely routine for local crews, and a mover working the Ostrava area will treat a Polish address across the bridge as a short local run rather than an international job.

Is a move to Prague from Poland different?

Longer, and it changes the arithmetic. From Warsaw or Gdansk you are into proper long haul territory where the driving dominates the price and a part load saves proportionally more. From Katowice to Ostrava you are not. Tell your mover both towns rather than both countries.

Which Czech destinations do people move to from Poland?

Overwhelmingly the Ostrava area in the east, which sits close to the border and shares much of the same industrial character. Prague and Brno take a share, but the geography makes the Moravian-Silesian region the natural destination.

Does this page cover both directions?

Yes. Poland to the Czech Republic and the Czech Republic to Poland are the same roads with the same absence of paperwork. Tell your mover which way you are going, because access at each end differs, but the job is structurally identical.
