Zhongshan spent decades on the wrong side of the Pearl River estuary. Getting to Shenzhen meant driving north around the water or crossing further south, and either way it took most of two hours. The link that opened in 2024 cut that to about half an hour, and it changed what a move to this city looks like.
One vetted mover from our network handles the job, matched for delta coverage. Worth checking that whoever quotes you is pricing on the new geography rather than the old one, because not every routing has caught up.
Containers clear at Nansha, north east across the water, or now at Shenzhen's terminals via the estuary link. Zhongshan has river port facilities of its own for coastal and feeder traffic.
For most of Zhongshan's modern history the Pearl River estuary was a wall. Shenzhen and its ports were visible across the water and effectively two hours away, because the only routes were north around the river mouth or south over the older bridges.
The estuary link that opened in 2024 runs roughly twenty four kilometres of bridge and tunnel directly across, and reduces that journey to around half an hour. For a household move it means Zhongshan now has genuine access to Shenzhen's terminals at Yantian and Shekou, where before it was effectively tied to Nansha.
That gives you a choice you did not previously have, and choice is worth money. If a sailing to Shenzhen suits your dates better than one to Nansha, the extra driving is now negligible rather than prohibitive.
Nansha remains a good option and is often the default. It sits north east across the water, reached by the delta road network, and it serves Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan and Zhuhai as well, which means combined weekly services are common.
Zhongshan also has river port facilities handling coastal and feeder traffic. They rarely feature in a household booking from Europe.
Zhongshan is organised more conventionally than Dongguan but it still spreads across a number of towns, each with its own trade.
Shiqi, the central district, is the traditional city centre and the main residential area. Mid and high rise blocks, mostly with lifts, on reasonably wide streets. The older parts near the river are denser but manageable. Most international residents who are not tied to a specific factory live here.
The Torch Development Zone in the east holds the technology and pharmaceutical industry and the compound housing built around it. Planned roads, service lifts, room to unload. It is the straightforward delivery in the municipality.
Guzhen, in the north west, is the lighting town. It manufactures and wholesales lighting on a scale that has made it the centre of that industry in China, and the market complex there is the largest of its kind. Residential access is a mix of newer compounds and older factory area housing.
Xiaolan and Dachong specialise in hardware and in redwood furniture respectively, with residential stock reflecting their workforces.
Cuiheng, in the east, is the village where Sun Yat-sen was born and is now a conservation area with a museum around it. Modern housing has grown up nearby.
One buying note that follows from the industry here. Lighting bought at Guzhen and redwood furniture from Dachong are both common purchases for people leaving. Both are bulky, both need proper packing, and new pieces are not used personal effects for customs purposes.
Typhoon exposure is the usual Guangdong pattern from June through September.
Zhongshan prices with the rest of the western delta. The estuary link has improved routing flexibility without much changing the underlying figures, though it does reduce the risk of a delivery slipping to a second day.

Clearance takes place at Nansha or Shenzhen rather than in Zhongshan. You need a valid residence permit, a full valued inventory and your passport details. The local point to watch is the distinction between used household goods and newly bought lighting or furniture.
The national rules are the same across mainland China, so the detail on permits, restricted goods and the cultural relics rule is set out in full on the China removals and shipping page. Read that before you start packing, particularly the section on items made before 1949.
Almost everyone leaving takes lighting or furniture with them, because the industry is on the doorstep and the prices are what they are. Plan it rather than deciding on the day.
New pieces are declared separately from your personal effects and may attract duty on arrival. Keep the invoices with the shipment. Redwood furniture needs particular attention: modern pieces are fine, but anything made before 1949 falls under the cultural relics rule and needs an export certificate.
For Britain, apply for Transfer of Residence relief with HMRC before the goods leave.
A move usually means moving money too, whether that is a deposit on a Zhongshan flat or funds coming back the other way. The estuary link has pulled Zhongshan closer to the eastern delta. Cities on both sides are now realistic alternatives when choosing where to live.

The estuary link that opened in 2024. Roughly twenty four kilometres of bridge and tunnel now run directly across the Pearl River estuary, cutting the journey to Shenzhen from around two hours to about half an hour. It gives Zhongshan genuine access to Shenzhen's terminals for the first time.
Nansha to the north east, which serves the whole western delta, or Shenzhen across the water now that the link is open. Having both in play improves your chances of catching a sailing that suits your dates, so ask your mover to check each rather than assuming.
Worth checking. A price built on the old two hour drive to Shenzhen is out of date and the difference is more than an hour each way. Ask which crossing the mover intends to use. Not every routing has caught up with the new geography.
The Torch Development Zone in the east, where the technology and pharmaceutical employers are and where the compound housing was built for that workforce. Planned roads, service lifts, room to unload. Shiqi, the central district, is the other common choice and is manageable throughout.
The lighting town in the north west. It manufactures and wholesales lighting on a scale that has made it the centre of that industry in China, with the largest market of its kind. If you are living or working there, residential access is a mix of newer compounds and older factory area housing.
Yes, and most people leaving do. New pieces are not used personal effects though, so they are declared separately and may attract duty at the far end. Keep the invoices, tell your mover in advance, and budget for proper crating because lighting is fragile and awkward.
Six to eight weeks door to door by sea. That covers roughly thirty five days sailing, clearance at Nansha or Shenzhen, and the road leg. The road leg is now shorter and more flexible than it was before the estuary link opened.
A valid residence permit, a complete inventory with values and your passport details. Clearance happens at the arrival port rather than in Zhongshan. The goods should be used personal effects arriving as one shipment within the permitted window after you enter the country.
Only with an export certificate. Dachong in this municipality is a redwood furniture centre and modern pieces export without difficulty. Anything made before 1949 falls under the cultural relics rule, so have older pieces assessed well before packing day.
