Macau is not part of mainland China for customs purposes. It is a separate customs territory with its own service, its own procedures and its own rules, and a move here is handled differently from a move to Zhuhai twenty minutes up the road.
We match you with one vetted mover from our network that handles cross boundary work. That matters more here than anywhere else in this build, because almost every Macau shipment involves a border and some involve two.
Macau has no deep sea container port of consequence. Goods arrive through Hong Kong or through a mainland terminal such as Nansha or Shenzhen, then cross into the territory by road or by water.
The first thing to be clear about is that Macau is not the mainland. It has its own customs service, its own import procedure and its own tariff arrangements. Mainland Chinese rules on residence permits and household goods relief do not apply here, and a mover quoting Macau as though it were an ordinary Guangdong city has misunderstood the job.
Through Hong Kong. The most common routing. A container clears at Hong Kong, itself a separate customs territory, then crosses to Macau by water or across the bridge. This involves two customs territories but both are efficient.
Through the mainland. A container clears at Nansha or Shenzhen and crosses into Macau at Gongbei or Hengqin. This works, but it means the goods have entered mainland China and then left it, which adds a stage of documentation.
Directly. Macau has port facilities but they handle limited traffic and rarely take a household container from Europe.
Which routing suits depends on the sailing and on where your goods are coming from. Ask your mover to explain the customs path, not just the shipping route, because on this destination they are different questions.
One point that catches people. Macau operates its own vehicle licensing and the territory is extremely small, so commercial vehicle movement is more constrained than on the mainland. Delivery vehicles are smaller, and the crew may transfer your goods more than once.
Macau is among the most densely populated places on earth, and every part of a move here is shaped by that.
The peninsula holds the historic centre and most of the older housing. The streets around Senado Square and the historic quarter are narrow, steep in places, and paved with the distinctive Portuguese mosaic stone. Much of the central area is pedestrianised. Buildings are old, lifts where they exist are small, and a good deal of the housing stock predates any expectation of furniture delivery. This is genuinely difficult access and it needs a survey.
Taipa is lower density with newer residential towers, better roads and working service lifts. It is where a lot of expatriate families live and it is much the easier delivery.
Cotai, the reclaimed strip between Taipa and Coloane, is where the large resorts sit along with newer staff and residential accommodation. Access is modern and straightforward.
Coloane, the southern island, is the quietest and greenest part, with village streets that are narrow but low traffic.
The flat size question is worth being direct about. Macau homes are small even by Hong Kong standards. A British three bedroom household will not fit into a typical Macau flat, and the constraint is usually the lift and the stairwell rather than the floor space. Measure both before you decide what to ship, because there is no point paying to send a wardrobe that cannot get past the second floor.
The population is more international than the size suggests. The gaming and hospitality industry employs people from across Southeast Asia, Portugal, Australia and Britain, so the local moving trade handles international household goods regularly.
Macau prices above a comparable mainland city because of the border handling and the access. The freight itself is not the expensive part. The customs path and the delivery day are.

The common Macau shipment, given how small the flats are.
Plan for around £1,400 to £3,600
A one or two bedroom flat, usually into Taipa or Cotai.
Plan for around £3,800 to £8,800
Larger family homes, generally in Taipa or Coloane.

Macau runs its own customs service and its own import procedure. This is the single most important thing to understand about moving here, and it is where most confusion starts.
Mainland Chinese requirements do not apply. There is no mainland residence permit condition, and the mainland rules on household goods relief and on items made before 1949 are not the rules you will be working to. Your mover should be explaining Macau's own procedure, not repeating what applies in Guangdong.
Two situations where the mainland does become relevant. If your goods travel through a mainland port on the way in, they enter and leave mainland China and that adds a stage of documentation. And if you are moving goods out of mainland China into Macau, the Chinese export rules apply to that leg, including the cultural relics certificate for older pieces.
Departures from Macau spread widely. The gaming and hospitality industry draws staff from across Southeast Asia, Portugal, Australia and Britain, and people leave in all of those directions.
Whichever it is, the export side is Macau's own procedure rather than mainland China's. For Britain, apply for Transfer of Residence relief with HMRC before the goods leave. If any part of your shipment came out of mainland China, keep any export certificates with the paperwork, because they may be asked for further down the chain.
A move usually means moving money too, whether that is a deposit on a Macau flat or funds coming back the other way. Macau borders Zhuhai and reaches Hong Kong by bridge. All three are separate customs territories from one another, so crossing between them is an international move each time.

Not for customs. Macau is a separate customs territory with its own service, its own import procedure and its own rules. A move here is handled differently from a move to Zhuhai twenty minutes away, and a mover quoting it as an ordinary Guangdong city has misunderstood the job.
No. The mainland condition on household goods relief does not apply in Macau, which runs its own procedure. Ask your mover to describe Macau's requirements specifically rather than repeating what applies in Guangdong.
Usually through Hong Kong, itself a separate customs territory, then across to Macau by water or the bridge. Alternatively through a mainland port such as Nansha or Shenzhen and across at Gongbei or Hengqin. Macau's own port facilities rarely take a household container from Europe.
It adds a stage. Goods entering and then leaving mainland China need that documented, and if you are moving items out of the mainland into Macau, Chinese export rules apply to that leg, including the cultural relics certificate for anything made before 1949.
Often not. Macau homes are small even by Hong Kong standards and the binding constraint is usually the lift and the stairwell rather than the floor space. Measure both before deciding what to ship, because there is no point paying to send a wardrobe that stops at the second floor.
Taipa, with its newer residential towers, better roads and working service lifts, or Cotai where the newer accommodation sits. The peninsula's historic quarter is the difficult one: narrow, steep, mosaic paved and largely pedestrianised.
Seven to nine weeks door to door by sea, which includes the crossing and the border formalities. Air freight is quicker and, given how small the flats are and how many Macau shipments are boxes rather than containers, it is a more realistic option here than in most places.
Macau operates its own vehicle licensing and the territory is very small, so commercial vehicle movement is more constrained than on the mainland. Delivery vehicles tend to be smaller, which means goods are sometimes moved into a second vehicle before the final leg.
Apply for Transfer of Residence relief with HMRC before the goods leave. The export side follows Macau's own procedure rather than mainland China's. If any of your belongings came out of mainland China, keep any export certificates with the paperwork.
