Jinan is built on water it cannot disturb. The city sits over a spring system that has given it its name and its character for centuries, and the conservation rules that protect the springs shape what can be built, and occasionally what can be driven, in the old core.
One vetted mover from our network handles it, matched for Shandong coverage. The useful local detail here is the conservation area, because a firm that has not worked the spring district will assume it is an ordinary city centre and find out otherwise.
Containers clear at Qingdao, about three hundred and fifty kilometres east on the coast, or occasionally at Tianjin to the north. Either way there is a substantial road leg, and it is in every Jinan quote.
Jinan is the main city of an inland province with a strong coast, which puts it in an unusual position. It has two good ports to choose from and is close to neither.
Qingdao is the natural choice. It is Shandong's own port, about three hundred and fifty kilometres east, and the expressway across the province is good. It also clears personal effects routinely, being used to a substantial Korean and Japanese residential population.
Tianjin to the north is the alternative and occasionally offers a better sailing date. The distance is comparable and the road is straightforward.
Either way you are paying for several hours of inland trunking, and that is the largest single difference between a Jinan quote and a coastal one. It is worth asking which port a mover is proposing and why, because sailing frequency and road cost pull in different directions.
The geography around the city is worth knowing. Jinan sits on a narrow strip between the mountains to the south and the Yellow River to the north, and the river here runs above the level of the surrounding plain behind levees. That constrains where the city can grow, which is why development has pushed east along the corridor rather than outwards in all directions.
Jinan divides between a protected historic core and a long eastward expansion, and they could hardly be more different to deliver into.
Lixia, the central district, holds the springs. Baotu, the Black Tiger group, Pearl Spring and the pools that feed Daming Lake sit within a few streets of each other, and the whole area is under conservation protection. Building height and construction are constrained because of the aquifer beneath, several streets are pedestrianised, and vehicle access near the main spring parks is limited. Housing there tends to be older and lower with no service lifts.
Lixia also contains the modern central business area further east, which is conventional high rise and perfectly straightforward. The two sit in the same district and behave completely differently, so name the street rather than the district when you ask for a price.
The high technology zone in the east is where most modern housing and corporate accommodation sits. Planned roads, service lifts, room to unload. This is the easy delivery in Jinan.
Licheng, the eastern district beyond it, has grown quickly with newer compounds and good access.
Shizhong and Huaiyin, west and south of the centre, are conventional urban districts of mid and high rise, mostly lifted, with tighter streets in the older parts.
Winters are cold and dry, summers hot and unusually humid for a northern city, because the surrounding hills trap air over the basin. July and August cost more in crew hours than the shoulder seasons do.
Jinan prices above the Shandong coast for the same volume, and the inland leg is the whole reason. Delivery in the eastern districts is cheap. Delivery in the spring conservation area is not.

Clearance happens at Qingdao or Tianjin rather than in Jinan, so your paperwork goes to the coast. You need a valid residence permit, a full valued inventory and your passport details. Qingdao in particular handles personal effects as routine work.
The national rules are the same across mainland China, so the detail on permits, restricted goods and the cultural relics rule is set out in full on the China removals and shipping page. Read that before you start packing, particularly the section on items made before 1949.
Departures follow the academic and corporate calendars in roughly equal measure, which spreads demand and makes capacity easier to find than in a purely school driven city.
Apply for Transfer of Residence relief with HMRC before the goods leave. Shandong has a long trade in older ceramics, stone rubbings and calligraphy, and rubbings taken from ancient stelae are a particular local speciality. Anything made before 1949 needs an export certificate, so have older pieces assessed rather than assuming a paper rubbing is too minor to matter.
A move usually means moving money too, whether that is a deposit on a Jinan flat or funds coming back the other way. We have helped customers with currency exchange in any currency through trusted partners for many years, and our partners can help with the money side of your move. Mention it on the form and it gets included.

Shandong's inland cities clear on the coast and drive in. Which port suits depends on the sailing rather than the distance, since both are comparable.

Qingdao, about three hundred and fifty kilometres east, is the natural choice and clears personal effects routinely. Tianjin to the north is the alternative and sometimes offers a better sailing date. Either way there is a substantial inland road leg in the quote.
The inland trunking. Several hours of road transport from the port is the single largest difference between a Jinan quote and a Qingdao one for the same volume. Delivery within the city is cheap by comparison, particularly in the eastern districts.
Central Lixia holds Baotu and the spring group that feeds Daming Lake, and the whole area is under conservation protection. Building is constrained because of the aquifer beneath, several streets are pedestrianised, and vehicle access near the spring parks is limited.
The high technology zone in the east, where most modern and corporate housing sits. Planned roads, working service lifts, space to unload. Licheng beyond it is similar. Development has pushed east along the corridor, so the newer the district the easier the delivery.
Seven to nine weeks door to door by sea. Roughly thirty five days sailing, a few working days clearing at Qingdao or Tianjin, and then the inland leg. Air freight into Yaoqiang takes about twelve days and is priced by weight.
Winters are cold and dry, which slows a crew without stopping one. Summers are hot and unusually humid for a northern city, because the hills trap air over the basin. July and August cost more in crew hours than spring or autumn.
The street. Lixia contains both the protected spring area and a modern business district, and they behave completely differently on delivery day. Naming the district alone can produce a quote built on the wrong assumption.
A valid residence permit, a complete inventory with values and your passport details. Clearance is at the coast rather than in Jinan. The goods should be used personal effects arriving as one shipment within the permitted window after you enter the country.
Only with an export certificate if they are old. Shandong has a strong trade in rubbings taken from ancient stelae as well as ceramics and calligraphy. Anything made before 1949 falls under the cultural relics rule, and a paper rubbing is not too minor to be caught by it.
