The sea leg is the easy part of an Algiers move

Algiers is unusual among capital cities in that the container terminal sits right against the city centre, below the streets that most people are actually moving into. There is almost no inland leg. What decides how a delivery day runs is not the distance from the quay, which is minimal, but whether a lorry can get within carrying distance of your door, and how many flights of stairs sit between the two.

The city climbs steeply from the bay. Above the flat commercial strip along the waterfront, the streets rise in tight switchbacks through the old colonial centre and on up to El Biar, Ben Aknoun and Hydra. Plenty of those addresses are on gradients and bends that a rigid articulated vehicle cannot take. The answer is a shuttle: the container is stripped at a yard or a wider street, and the load comes up in a smaller vehicle in several runs.

Shuttling is normal here, and a firm that works the city will price it in from the start. A quote that does not mention access is a quote that has not asked about your address yet.

Send a photo of your street and the building entrance with your enquiry. On Algiers it saves more back and forth than any other single detail, because it settles the shuttle question and the stair count in one go.

🏠 What international movers need from your address

Delivery conditions movers and packers plan around

Algiers is not one delivery problem, it is four or five. The district usually tells an international moving company how the day will run before anyone has seen the building, and it decides whether the packing crew is unwrapping at the door or carrying sealed items up six flights first.

The Casbah and the old quarter

The Casbah is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and much of it is stepped alleyway rather than road. Vehicles simply do not reach many addresses, and everything goes in by hand from the nearest point a van can stop. If you are moving into or out of the old quarter, say so early. It changes the crew size, the time on site and the price, and it is not something to discover on the morning.

The colonial centre

Handsome nineteenth century blocks with high ceilings, generous rooms and stairwells that were never built for a three seat sofa. Lifts, where they exist, are often original and small. Expect a stair carry, and expect large items to be measured against the turn on the landing rather than the doorway. Anything that will not make the turn has to go through a window opening or be dismantled.

Hydra, El Biar and Ben Aknoun

The heights above the centre, and where a good deal of diplomatic and company housing sits. Wider properties and often a driveway, which helps, but the approach roads are steep with tight bends and parked cars. A shuttle is common, and a morning slot is worth asking for so the vehicle is not working against the school and office traffic on those same roads.

Bab Ezzouar and the eastern suburbs

Newer apartment developments on flatter ground out towards the airport, with the easiest vehicle access in the wilaya. Lifts are more common and usable. If you have a choice of address and a large household, this is the part of Algiers that costs least to deliver into, which is not a reason to choose it, but is worth knowing.

📋 Clearing at Algiers

Why your travel dates matter more here than anywhere

Algiers handles most household goods clearances in the country, and the rule that catches people applies with full force at this port: a Certificate of Change of Residence has to be used in person. The holder must attend the customs clearance. Nobody can stand in for you, not a relative, not the mover.

So the sequence to plan is your flight, then the vessel, then the collection in the UK, working backwards. Because the terminal is in the middle of a busy capital rather than out on a quiet coast, quayside time is not somewhere you want to be paying for while a notice period runs out in London.

The wider paperwork, the three year residence rule, the legalised inventory and the six month deadline on the certificate itself, is covered on the Algeria removals page and in the customs guide.

🚚 Leaving Algiers

Moving out of the capital to the UK

The return leg runs regularly, for families joining relatives, students finishing a course, contractors at the end of a posting and people clearing a property in the city. The shipping side is the same in reverse. The customs side is not.

Coming into the UK you apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence relief on the ToR1 form and hold the reference number before the goods leave Algiers. Processing takes weeks, not days, and stretches in the summer. Start it before you book anything. Start it before you book anything.

Other destinations we publish detail on: Annaba and El Oued. Delivering elsewhere in the wilaya of Alger, Blida, Boumerdes or Tipaza? Send the town on the form. Coverage is national.

Questions about moving to Algiers

Will a lorry reach my building?

In the eastern suburbs and on the flat, usually. In the old centre, on the heights and anywhere near the Casbah, often not. The normal answer is a shuttle, where the container is unloaded at an accessible point and the goods come up in a smaller vehicle. It adds time and cost, so it belongs in the quote rather than in a surprise on the day.

How long does a container take from the UK?

Around twelve days at sea on a direct sailing to Algiers. Door to door is commonly four to six weeks, because a shared container waits for other loads, transhipment adds days where the routing needs it, and clearance depends on your paperwork and your arrival. Ask for the sailing schedule rather than an average.

Can my brother collect the container for me?

Not if you are clearing under a CCR. The certificate holder has to be present for the customs procedure at Algiers. A relative can do a great deal around the move, but not that, and the container waits at cost until you are there.

Is it worth shipping large furniture to an old flat?

Measure the stairwell turn, not the doorway. Nineteenth century blocks in the centre have generous rooms reached by tight landings, and wardrobes and long sofas are the usual casualties. A mover who works Algiers will ask for the landing width before quoting, and dismantling is often cheaper than the alternative.
