Annaba sits in the far north east of Algeria, close to the Tunisian border, on the Seybouse near the ruins of ancient Hippo. If your delivery address is anywhere in that corner of the country, discharging at Annaba rather than Algiers takes several hundred kilometres of Algerian road out of the job. That matters, because the inland leg is priced separately and is one of the easiest costs to underestimate from a UK desk.
From the Port of Annaba, code DZAAE, a mover reaches El Tarf, Guelma, Souk Ahras and the border communes comfortably, and Constantine and Skikda are a straightforward run west. Send a container to Algiers instead and everything east of Setif is being trucked across the country before it reaches your door.
Not every international moving company quotes the eastern ports as a matter of course, so it is worth naming Annaba when you ask. The counterweight is sailing frequency. Annaba has fewer calls from northern Europe than the capital, so a box on an earlier direct string into Algiers can still land sooner overall even allowing for the road. That is a schedule question, not a map question, and it is answered per shipment rather than as a rule.
The default for the north east corner. Shortest road leg for Annaba itself, El Tarf, Guelma and Souk Ahras, and the obvious choice for anyone delivering close to the Tunisian frontier. Also the port with the passenger link, which matters if you are coordinating a vehicle with the household.
About a hundred kilometres west along the coast and a working alternate when the schedule into Annaba is thin. Skikda also serves Constantine well. It is a heavy industrial port, so household consignments share the estate with bulk and energy traffic, which occasionally shows up as slower turnaround.
Further west near Jijel, and the deepwater option Algeria has been building up to take container pressure off Algiers. Worth asking about when the eastern schedule is awkward, particularly for a full container load where a single deepwater call can beat two transhipments.
Algérie Ferries runs a passenger and vehicle service between Annaba and Marseille. The line was suspended in December 2024 while sailings were concentrated on Skikda, and it resumed on 19 June 2025. It is a genuinely useful route for the diaspora in France, and it is how a lot of people bring a car and accompanied baggage home for the summer.
It is not a household removals route. The capacity, the customs treatment of accompanied baggage and the seasonal pattern all make it the wrong tool for a full home. Where it earns its keep is alongside a container: the family and the car on the boat, the household in a box. Worth checking current sailings, since this line has moved between ports more than once.
Most of the traffic is returning nationals with roots in Annaba, El Tarf, Guelma and Souk Ahras, moving back permanently under a Certificate of Change of Residence. The eastern communities have long links to France in particular, so it is common for a household to be split between a UK address and relatives already back in Algeria.
The paperwork is identical wherever you land: three unbroken years of residence abroad, consular registration, a legalised inventory, and the six month deadline that starts when the certificate is issued. The Algeria removals page covers it in full.
Annaba is one of Algeria's industrial centres, and the surrounding wilaya carries steel, chemicals and port engineering. That produces a steady stream of foreign nationals on fixed term contracts, which is a different move with different rules.
If you are authorised to settle for three years or more, household furniture for your own use clears free of duty against your installation authorisation. Expect to re-export it at the end of the posting rather than sell it locally, and plan the shipment size with that in mind.

Annaba is an eastern coastal port, and it is also the practical northern entry point for a good deal of the eastern interior and the northern Sahara. Tébessa, Oum El Bouaghi and Khenchela run south from here on reasonable roads, and the Souf follows the same corridor. Tassili Airlines even links Annaba directly to El Oued and Hassi Messaoud, which tells you where the traffic naturally flows.
For a household bound for El Oued or the surrounding Souf, an eastern port is usually the shorter road even though Algiers is the bigger terminal. That is worth raising at enquiry stage rather than accepting a default routing through the capital.
If the delivery address is east of Setif, Annaba usually wins on the road leg. If the sailing schedule into Annaba is thin that month, an earlier direct call at Algiers can still land sooner overall. Ask for both options priced, road leg included, rather than accepting the first routing offered.
Not a household. The Annaba to Marseille service carries passengers and vehicles, and accompanied baggage is treated differently from a household goods import. It works well for a car and personal luggage, often alongside a container carrying the home. Check current sailings, as the line has moved between Annaba and Skikda before.
Rabah Bitat Airport, code AAE, sits about nine kilometres south of the city and handles international services including routes to France. Air freight suits a few boxes of essentials to bridge the gap while a container is at sea. For a household it is not economic.
Anywhere. El Tarf, Guelma and Souk Ahras are short runs, Constantine and Tébessa are comfortable, and the corridor carries on south towards the Souf. The road leg is priced on distance and access, so the delivery commune belongs on the enquiry form from the start.
