Algeria is the rare move where a document, not the distance, decides when your goods can travel. Algerian nationals returning permanently apply to their consulate for a Certificate of Change of Residence, the CCR. Once it is issued, the move must be completed within six months. Miss that window and the duty free entitlement lapses, so the sensible order is to have the shipping plan ready before the certificate is granted, not after.
The application itself is not instant either. Consular services quote around fifteen days to process a complete file, and the file has to be complete: consular registration, proof of three unbroken years of residence outside Algeria, a sworn declaration that you have never held a CCR before, and a valued inventory of everything you intend to import. That inventory is legalised by the consulate, which is what turns it into a customs document rather than a packing list.
The other Algerian particular is that you have to be there. The CCR holder must be physically present when the goods are cleared. A container can sit at the quayside while its owner is still in the UK finishing a notice period, and quayside storage is chargeable. Book your own travel around the arrival, not the other way round.
This is most of the traffic on the route. The entitlement covers your personal belongings and furniture, plus those of your spouse and any minor children living with you abroad, free of duty and tax. The core conditions are consistent across Algerian consular posts: you must be registered with the consulate as a principal, be over nineteen, show three unbroken years of residence outside Algeria, be returning permanently, and never have used a CCR before.
The exemption is capped by value, and the ceiling covers the whole import including any vehicle, with a lower ceiling for students and trainees. Because the ceiling is set in Algerian dinars and the inventory is valued at the rate of the day, an honest valuation matters more here than in most countries.
A CCR also removes you from the consular register. If you later settle abroad again you have to register from scratch, and you cannot draw a second CCR.
Foreigners authorised to settle in Algeria for three years or more can clear household furniture for their own use and that of a spouse and minor children, free of duty, on production of the installation authorisation issued by the competent Algerian authority. The supporting documents are endorsed by the Algerian diplomatic or consular post covering your area.
The condition people overlook sits at the other end: goods brought in this way are expected to leave with you. Anything imported under the arrangement should be re-exported when the posting finishes, which is worth knowing before you ship a household you were planning to sell locally at the end of a contract.
Sailings from Felixstowe, London Gateway and Southampton reach the Algerian coast either directly or through a Mediterranean transhipment hub. A direct string leaving five days earlier often beats a nominally closer port that is only served by transhipment, so pick on the schedule rather than on the map. Port charges and any local taxes are payable by the consignee unless a delivered service is arranged.
The default for the centre of the country and the busiest gateway for household goods. Serves the capital, Blida, Tizi Ouzou and the whole Mitidja plain. Roughly twelve days steaming on a direct sailing from the UK.
The western gateway, covering Oran itself plus Sidi Bel Abbes, Mostaganem, Tlemcen and Ghazaouet. Worth choosing when the delivery address is west of Chlef, since the inland leg from Algiers gets long quickly.

The eastern gateway for Annaba, El Tarf, Guelma and Souk Ahras, with Skikda and Djen Djen as alternates on the same coast. Usually the shortest inland leg for anywhere near the Tunisian border.
Algeria is the largest country in Africa, and the road leg after the port is a real cost line rather than a rounding error. A delivery to El Oued in the Souf runs several hundred kilometres inland from the northern coast, and the same is true of Ghardaia, Ouargla, Laghouat and Bechar. Hassi Messaoud traffic tends to be energy sector rather than household.

We are not going to invent UK planning bands for a corridor we cannot evidence properly. Published UK to Algeria household rates are thin, and the honest position is that this route prices on volume, port and paperwork rather than on mileage. For a sense of scale, one dated market reference from the France to Algeria corridor puts a twenty foot container at roughly two thousand to five thousand euros, quoted in March 2026. Treat that as a French market reference point, not a UK quote.

Below roughly fifteen cubic metres, groupage in a shared container is usually far cheaper, because you pay for the space you occupy. You give up the fixed sailing date in exchange. A full twenty foot or forty foot container makes sense once the volume fills it, and it also shortens the handling chain, which matters when the inventory has to match a legalised document.
The CCR carries a fee, each legalised document carries a smaller one, and there is a further charge that rises in steps with the declared value on the inventory. So a heavily valued inventory costs more to legalise as well as eating into the exemption ceiling. This is the avoidable one. Clearance needs you present and needs the file complete. Every day the container waits for a person or a stamp is chargeable, and it is the single most common way an Algeria move ends up over budget. Planning the arrival around the vessel rather than the vessel around the arrival removes most of it.
Collections anywhere in the UK are normal on this route, with London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow the most frequent. Scottish and Northern Irish collections carry the extra road distance to the load port, so they sit above equivalent English ones. Access at both ends, stairs, lift, street width, moves the figure as much as postcode does.

Almost always one of three things. The inventory was never legalised, so customs has a packing list rather than a customs document. The owner is not in the country, so nothing can be cleared. Or the CCR was issued early, the move slipped, and the six month window closed.
All three are scheduling problems, not shipping problems, which is why the consular timetable and the sailing schedule need to be planned as one thing. Mention your CCR date on the enquiry form and the mover can work backwards from it.
The Algerian dinar is a closed currency. You cannot buy it in the UK before you fly, and importing or exporting dinar notes is restricted, with only residents permitted to carry a small allowance in or out. Card acceptance outside hotels is limited, so most people arrive holding cash and need to know the declaration rules.
Bank of Algeria rules set a declaration threshold for cash brought in or taken out. Algerian nationals, resident or not, declare from a lower threshold than foreign non-residents, and taking larger sums back out requires the endorsed inbound declaration or, above a higher figure, Bank of Algeria authorisation. Declaring costs nothing. The stamped form is what proves the money entered legally, so keep it.
Thresholds have been adjusted more than once in recent years. Check the current figures with the Direction Générale des Douanes before you travel rather than relying on a figure a relative quotes from an earlier trip.

The 2026 Finance Law changed a rule that had stood for years. A CCR holder could previously only bring in a brand new vehicle. From 1 January 2026 the vehicle may be new or less than five years old on the date it enters Algerian customs territory.
The Consulate General of Algeria in London has published the detail for its own jurisdiction. The entitlement covers one vehicle: a passenger car that is electric, petrol or petrol hybrid with a cylinder capacity at or below 1,800 cm³, or a light commercial vehicle at or below 5,950 kg gross weight on the same fuel types, or a registered two wheeler. Diesel vehicles are excluded whether new or used.
That last line is the one that matters for a UK household, because diesel is common in the British fleet and a diesel car many families assumed they were bringing simply does not qualify. Confirm your vehicle against the consulate's current notice before you ship it, and do not order a car until the CCR file is approved. Vehicles also count against the overall value ceiling for the exemption.
