🌍 Shipping the other way, St Lucia to the UK

The service runs both ways

Most of what we do is moves to St Lucia, but plenty of people move the other way, back to the UK after years on the island, students heading over to study, or families sending belongings to relatives. The shipping idea is the same, just reversed: your goods are packed and loaded in St Lucia, sail from Port Castries, and clear customs at a UK port such as Southampton, Tilbury or Felixstowe. What changes is the customs at the UK end, and that's where it pays to have a partner who knows the rules.

📋 UK customs and Transfer of Residence relief

Bringing your home into the UK

If you're moving your normal home to the UK, you may claim Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, which lets you bring used household goods and personal belongings in free of UK import duty and VAT. The main conditions: you've lived outside the UK for at least 12 months, you've owned and used the goods for at least 6 months, and they're for your own use, not for sale. The important catch is timing, you apply to HMRC with a ToR1 form and must have the approval reference before your goods reach the UK, as customs won't release them without it, and approval can take a few weeks. Private vehicles can be included. If you're only sending gifts or goods to family, that's not a transfer of residence, so UK import VAT, currently 20%, and any duty may apply. Your vetted partner and a UK customs agent guide you through it.

🚚 Loading and shipping from the island

From your St Lucia address to a UK port

Your vetted partner packs and protects your goods at your address on the island, loads a shared or full container, and books it onto a sailing from Port Castries. Allow roughly three to five weeks for the crossing, usually transhipped through a regional hub, plus packing before and UK clearance after. Once it lands and clears, your goods are delivered to your UK address, with furniture reassembled. Start your enquiry from the St Lucia hub if you're still weighing up the move.

St Lucia to the UK: common questions

Yes. The service runs both ways. Your vetted partner packs and loads on the island, ships from Port Castries to a UK port such as Southampton or Tilbury, and clears it at the UK end, then delivers to your address.

It's a UK customs relief that lets you bring used household goods and personal belongings into the UK free of import duty and VAT when you move your normal home there. You need to have lived outside the UK for at least 12 months and owned the goods for at least 6 months.

You apply to HMRC using a ToR1 form, with a detailed inventory, and you must have the approval reference before your goods reach the UK, as customs won't release them without it. Approval can take a few weeks, so start early. Your partner and a customs agent help.

Then it isn't a transfer of residence, so UK import VAT, currently 20%, and any duty may apply on the declared value. A customs agent works out what's due. Smaller gift parcels are handled differently from a household shipment.

A private vehicle can usually be included in a Transfer of Residence claim if it meets the conditions, including ownership for at least 6 months. It must also meet UK registration and road rules once here. Your partner and the customs agent advise.

Allow roughly three to five weeks for the sea crossing, usually transhipped through a regional hub, plus packing in St Lucia before and UK customs clearance after. Your partner gives a firm schedule.

Shipments typically arrive at major UK container ports such as Southampton, Tilbury or Felixstowe, then travel on by road to your address. Your partner confirms the routing for your move.

It depends on the volume, shared or full container, and delivery in the UK. Your partner gives an indicative figure after a survey. The same pricing logic as the inbound route applies; see the cost guide.

No. We're a free service that connects you with one vetted partner who packs, ships and clears your goods, working with a UK customs agent. We don't carry out the move, and more than 850,000 enquiries have been connected since 2010.
