Search for what overseas removals cost and you will find ranges wide enough to be nearly useless. The reason is not evasion. Two Dorset households shipping the same destination, the same month, can differ by a factor of three, and none of that difference shows up in a table. What follows is the anatomy: the seven things that actually set your figure, in the order they matter.
Published ranges do exist, and ours are set out on our international removals costs page alongside the international removals overview. Use them for budgeting. What they cannot do is tell you where in the range a Dorset house falls, and that gap is what this page is about.
International movers who quote over the phone are pricing an average, and averages are wrong in both directions. Yours will either be inflated to cover the risk or too low to hold.
The survey costs you an hour and nothing else. It is the only way to get a number that survives contact with the actual house.
Freight sells in bands. A twenty foot box holds roughly thirty three cubic metres and a forty foot around sixty seven, which makes thirty five an expensive number and fourteen a cheap one. Shaving volume matters only where it crosses a line.
A well used corridor with weekly departures prices differently from a thin route with a sailing every six weeks. Distance matters less than traffic. Some far destinations cost less than nearer ones simply because more boxes go there.
This is where Dorset costs more than most counties. A Purbeck lane, a Portland gradient or a Shaftesbury cobbled hill each turns a straightforward day into a shuttle for overseas movers, and shuttles are priced in crew hours.
Packing level is a genuine choice with a genuine consequence. Owner packed cartons cost nothing and are excluded from most transit cover. Full export packing by movers and packers costs real money, and it is what the policy usually requires before it pays on anything fragile.
Season is the lever most people ignore. Crews book out across June to September before shipping space does, so a July collection arranged in May costs more and offers less choice than the same job in February. Moving a date by three weeks sometimes saves more than any negotiation.
Awkward items are priced individually because they are handled individually. A piano, a safe, a motorbike, a marble table top. Each needs a plan and often a purpose built crate, and none of it hides inside a volume figure.
Then the charges nobody quotes: port storage after the free days expire, inspection fees, duty where relief is refused. These sit outside the removal price and land on you, and almost every one traces to paperwork answered late.
Check they are scoped identically before you look at the totals. Door to door against door to port, all risks against named perils, packing included against packing excluded. Two figures built on different scopes teach you nothing at all.
Send the country, an estimate of what is travelling and your month. One accredited firm measures the volume and the access, then quotes from what it saw. Nothing to pay and nothing signed.
Furniture is the bulk of most quotes because it is the bulk of most households. Wardrobes, beds, sofas and dining sets account for the majority of the cubic metres, so any serious attempt to cut a figure starts with furniture and not with cartons.
Dismantling is charged as labour and repaid in volume. Furniture in parts occupies far less space, which is why international movers and packers price dismantling separately, and where that shift crosses a container threshold the saving outweighs the hours several times over. Ask for both figures before deciding.
Reassembly at the destination is a separate line more often than not. Check whether it is included, because a quote that looks cheaper at origin can cost more once somebody has to put the beds back together at the far end.
Relief on used household effects generally needs ownership and use for a qualifying period, six months in most cases, plus a genuine transfer of your permanent home. Where the claim fails, duty is assessed on the value of the goods and it is yours to pay.
Terminal free days are the other one. Three to seven days is typical, after which demurrage runs at roughly a hundred to three hundred US dollars a day, more at peak. That clock is almost always started by a document nobody returned rather than by anything the shipping line did.
Inbound to Britain the relief is Transfer of Residence, claimed with HMRC on the ToR1 form ahead of arrival. Allow weeks for the reference. A late application is the most expensive free thing you can get wrong.
The good ones will not. Searching international removal companies near me from a Dorset postcode turns up plenty who will, and those numbers get revised once somebody sees the lane. An international removal company that measures first is quoting; international movers who skip it are guessing, and international moving companies vary enormously on this.
Sometimes, if it is scoped the same as the others. Usually the gap is explained by something excluded: packing, reassembly, destination clearance. Read what each international removals company excludes before you read the total, and the picture normally resolves itself.
Weeks, usually, because freight rates and capacity keep shifting. Ask for the expiry in writing. A figure obtained in winter and accepted in summer is a new price, not a revision.
