People check what international movers quote line by line and never look at the document that actually decides whether their goods can be collected at the far end. It is called the bill of lading, it is issued once, and a mistake on it is far harder to fix after the ship has sailed.

Prudhoe is a good place to be relaxed about the physical side. It sits on the A69 in the Tyne valley with the shortest run in Northumberland to the Port of Tyne, so international movers reach it easily and the road leg barely registers. The paperwork deserves the attention instead.
It looks like an invoice and it is nothing of the sort. It is the instrument that proves the shipping line took your goods, sets out the terms it took them on, and controls who is allowed to collect them at the other end.
Proof the line received the container, in the condition described, on the date shown. If a claim ever arises this is the anchor document for it.
The carriage terms live on the back of it, including the line's own liability limits, which are separate from your removal cover and much lower.
The important one. Nobody collects the container without satisfying this document, which is why the version you hold matters so much.
The name on it must match your passport. Not your usual name, not a shortened version, not a married name you have started using but not yet changed on the document. A mismatch at the destination turns a delivery into a correspondence.
Check the destination port too. A removal company quoting Sydney and a bill of lading naming Melbourne is not a typo you want to discover on arrival.
An original bill of lading is a physical document, usually issued in a set of three, and one signed original has to be surrendered at the destination before anything is released. Lose it and the replacement process is slow and expensive.
A telex release is the sensible alternative on a household move. The originals are surrendered at this end and the line instructs its destination office electronically, so nothing has to travel in your hand luggage or through the post.
For an ordinary international relocation, ask your international moving company for the telex release. There is rarely a reason to carry originals across the world, and there is one very obvious reason not to.
