Manchester sits 300 miles from Dover, where a Greek load leaves Britain

Three hundred miles of England sit between a Manchester collection and the Channel. That is a day of driving before the international leg starts, and it is the reason a Manchester quote should show the domestic leg separately.

Hull is a third of that distance and sails to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge with P&O. It suits moves into the Netherlands or Belgium. For Greece it usually does not help, because the road route runs south through France and Italy to an Adriatic ferry, and landing in Rotterdam puts you north of where you need to be.

The Hull question, answered once

Every northern enquiry asks it, so here it is plainly. P&O sail from Hull to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge. Those sailings are excellent for the Netherlands, Belgium and much of Germany. For Greece they land you roughly 1,000 miles north of the Adriatic ports your load needs to reach, which is why the Channel wins despite being three times further from Manchester.

The exception is a container. Boxes routed through Immingham or Felixstowe do not care about your road distance in the same way, because the sea leg absorbs it.

Rough distances

  • Manchester to Hull, about 100 miles
  • Manchester to Dover, about 300 miles
  • Dover to Patras by road, about 1,500 miles
Where your goods clear

Piraeus or Thessaloniki, and why nobody asks

Quotes rarely name the Greek port, and the inland leg at the far end is rarely itemised. If your Greek address sits anywhere north of Larissa, Thessaloniki saves roughly 500km of driving that somebody is paying for. Island addresses add a sailing after either. Paperwork is unchanged by where you started: relief depends on transferring your home, not on your postcode.

Manchester to Greece questions

What people ask about moving from Manchester to Greece

Answers sit open on the page rather than behind dropdowns.

Is there a ferry from Manchester to Europe?

Manchester is inland and has no sea ferry of its own. The nearest crossings to the continent leave from Hull, about 100 miles east, and from the Channel ports about 300 miles south. A Greek move normally uses the Channel.

Does a Manchester collection cost more than a southern one?

Usually a little, because of the road leg before the international one. On a shared load the difference is smaller than people expect, since the collection joins a vehicle already running. Ask for the domestic leg to be shown as its own line.

Can I use Hull for a move to Greece?

Rarely worth it. P&O sail from Hull to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge, which suits the Netherlands and Belgium. Greece sits at the far end of a route through France and Italy, so landing in the north adds distance.

How long does Manchester to Greece take?

Longer than the mileage suggests, because waiting time matters more than driving time. A dedicated vehicle is quickest and dearest. A shared load waits for the container to fill, which is where most of the variation comes from.

Do you cover the rest of the north west?

Yes, including Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside. Put the actual collection postcode on the form rather than the nearest city, because access and the domestic leg are priced from the address.
