Pieria sits close enough to Greece's second city that using its port is obvious, and far enough from Athens that using Piraeus is not. An hour of motorway against most of the length of the country is the difference, and it is entirely decided by which port your quote assumes.
It is the clearest saving anywhere in Greece that exists only if somebody asks for it.
Quotes route through Piraeus because most traffic does. From Piraeus to Katerini is roughly 500km. From Thessaloniki it is about 70. Nobody itemises the inland leg, so the two quotes can look similar and differ by a day. Why the northern port matters.
Katerini itself is modern and easy for access. Paralia and the coastal strip are straightforward outside the summer, when the resort roads get congested. The villages rising towards Olympus are the exception: steeper, narrower, and sometimes beyond a long vehicle.
Customs relief is unaffected by any of it, and the inland leg is what moves the price.
