Chania takes its goods through Souda Bay, a working naval port

Souda Bay is Chania's commercial harbour and it is also a naval base, shared with allied forces. It handles freight normally, but it is a working military port and that occasionally shapes access and scheduling in ways a purely commercial harbour would not.

Once your goods are ashore, the second constraint appears: the Venetian old town behind the harbour has streets that were laid out for handcarts.

🏘 The old town problem

Behind the harbour, nothing gets a lorry

The lanes around the Venetian harbour are narrow, some are stepped, and several are pedestrian in practice whatever the signs say. A delivery to an old town address means a small vehicle to the nearest usable point and a carry from there.

Modern Chania outside the old quarter is straightforward, as are Nea Chora and the suburbs. Say which you are, because the two are priced differently and correctly so.

Old town addresses

  • Nearest point a van can reach
  • Steps between there and the door
  • Whether the lane is pedestrian in the daytime
🗺 Where Chania sits

The western end of a long island

If your goods clear at Heraklion instead of Souda, they cross most of Crete to reach you. That is a real cost and it is rarely shown separately. How the two Cretan ports compare.

📋 Paperwork, and the practical order

Clearance first, access second, delivery last

Customs is dealt with before the island leg. What relief requires. What catches people out in Chania is the access arrangement, not the paperwork, so settle the old town question early if it applies.

Chania moving questions

What people ask about moving to Chania

Answers sit open on the page rather than behind dropdowns.

Which port serves Chania?

Souda Bay, a few kilometres east of the town. It is the commercial harbour for western Crete and also a naval base, which handles freight normally but is a working military port.

Can a lorry deliver in the old town?

No. The lanes behind the Venetian harbour are narrow, some stepped, and several pedestrian in practice. Expect a small vehicle to the nearest usable point and a carry from there.

What if my goods land at Heraklion?

They cross most of Crete to reach you, which is a long inland leg on an island roughly 260km end to end. Ask which port the quote assumes rather than trusting that it is the near one.

Is delivery to Nea Chora and the suburbs easier?

Considerably. Modern Chania outside the old quarter takes normal vehicles and normal crews. It is the old town specifically that changes the job.

How far in advance should I arrange it?

Earlier than you would for a mainland move, because the island leg and the access arrangement both need booking rather than assuming. Summer is tighter than the rest of the year.

Can you collect from Chania as well?

Yes. Property clearances and return moves work the same way in reverse, and old town access matters just as much at the collection end.
