Overseas moving paperwork is full of freight trade language that nobody explains, and people sign it anyway because asking feels awkward. It should not. Here are the eight terms that actually appear on a household quote, in plain words, so you can read yours before agreeing to it.

Less than container load. Your goods share a container with other households going the same way and you pay for the cubic metres you fill. Cheaper below roughly fifteen cubic metres. The cost is time: the container waits until it is full.
Full container load. The box is yours alone, loaded at your address and sealed. You are buying a sailing date rather than a collection window. Above roughly fifteen cubic metres it usually becomes the better value option as well as the faster one.
The bill of lading is the shipping line's document. It records what is being carried, by whom, from where to where, and it functions as title to the goods. Your name and the destination address on it must be right, because correcting one after issue is slow and sometimes charged. Check it when it is issued and not when the container arrives.
Transfer of Residence, usually shortened to ToR, is the relief that lets you bring used household goods into the United Kingdom without duty. You apply to HMRC on the ToR1 form and receive a reference number, and your shipment quotes that number at clearance.
Apply before the goods arrive. This is the single most common avoidable delay on inbound moves, because processing runs to weeks, not days and the summer queue is longer. Leaving the United Kingdom the equivalent relief is the destination country's own, and it is that country's rules that decide it.
Demurrage is the charge that accrues when a container sits at a port beyond its free period, usually because clearance has not happened. It is not the mover's fee, it belongs to the port or the shipping line, and it climbs daily.
Almost every demurrage bill traces back to paperwork lodged late or an inventory that raised questions. It is the most avoidable cost in the whole process and the reason the documentation deadlines are worth taking seriously.
What happens to a shared load at the destination. The container is opened at a warehouse and each household's goods are separated out before delivery. It is routine, and it is also where the extra time on a groupage shipment comes from.
Ask how long deconsolidation typically takes on your route. On a busy corridor it can be days. On a thin one it can be a fortnight, and knowing which you are on changes how you plan the first weeks in the new house.
Marine transit cover for a household move is written against a value you declare. You list what things are worth, the premium follows the total, and a claim is settled against your own figure. Underdeclare and the payout reduces in proportion, which is not obvious until it happens.
Three questions separate a good policy from a poor one. Is it all risks or limited to named perils. Are pairs and sets covered as a set, so a damaged chair does not leave you with five. Does the excess apply per item or once per shipment.
Your home contents policy will not cover this. Standard cover ends when goods leave the property and most policies exclude commercial storage and transit entirely.

Some do and some quote to port, and the words look similar on paper. A search for international removal companies near me will return both. Ask directly whether destination handling, clearance and delivery are inside the figure. An international removals company quoting door to door owns the whole chain, which is usually what you want.
Volume in cubic metres, plus access. Those two produce nearly every other number on the quote. Open the loft, the garage and any outbuilding for the surveyor, because a volume that turns out wrong on packing day can cost you your space on a shared container.

The service level is, more than the rate. Reducing volume, changing the packing split or moving to a quieter month all lower the figure legitimately. Pressing purely on price tends to produce a thinner service instead of a better deal, most often on packing materials.
