Volume drives the price of an international move more than anything else, and volume is one of the very few parts you control completely. So instead of talking about containers and ports, this page walks through an average house here one room at a time and asks the same three questions in each: ship it, sell it, or leave it.

Curtains and blinds almost never fit the next house. Take them only if they are handmade and expensive, and even then measure first.
These are the spaces people forget when they guess at cubic metres, and they are also where the biosecurity and dangerous goods problems live.
Open it before the surveyor arrives. Christmas decorations, suitcases, old paperwork and the boxes from the last move add up to more volume than most people expect, and a surveyor who is told the loft is empty will price accordingly.
None of it can travel. Paint, thinners, petrol, gas cylinders, aerosols, weedkiller and pool chemicals are all prohibited in a household shipment. Dispose of them locally instead of expecting the crew to take them away.
Hand tools ship fine. Anything with an engine must be completely drained of fuel and oil, and cleaned of soil. Mowers and strimmers are among the most frequently rejected items at Australian and New Zealand inspection.
Plants and soil cannot travel. Pots can, once scrubbed completely clean. Garden furniture ships if it is worth the space, though teak and rattan both get looked at closely for insects and untreated timber.
