Portland is reached across a causeway carrying the A354 beside Chesil Beach, and that single approach shapes every removal on the island. Ignore it and a lorry gets stuck somewhere with nowhere to turn.

It is a working commercial and cruise port, and having one a few minutes from your door is genuinely unusual. It is also not where your container will go. Deep sea lines run scheduled services from fixed container terminals, and household consignments follow those schedules.
In practice that means the load crosses the causeway, runs up through Weymouth to the A354 and the A35, and heads east to Southampton for most long haul sailings. The port on your doorstep is a landmark. It is not a route.

Underhill streets climb steeply and the doors are narrow. Getting a sideboard or a wardrobe out often means dismantling at the top of the stairs and carrying the parts to a van waiting on the flat.
Stone garden furniture is a Portland speciality and a separate problem. Benches, troughs and carved ornaments are heavy without being bulky, and they need their own place in the loading plan.
Ask about reassembly at the destination before you agree the price. A piece taken apart to leave the island has to go back together somewhere, and whether that is included varies by company.
