Not every move abroad is a household. Overseas removals cover students, people taking a posting for a year, and anyone shipping a single room or a few cartons of books and clothes. For all of them the answer is rarely a container, and often not a removal company at all. Three options exist below that threshold and they suit different loads, so here is how they compare.

It stops working the moment furniture appears, the destination sits outside Europe, or the contents are worth more than a parcel policy will pay. Each of those turns the job from transport into logistics, and couriers do not do logistics.
A courier parcel clears on a simple declaration. A pallet or a self hired crate does not, and arranging your own clearance in a country whose procedure you have never used costs either an agent's fee or several days.
Priced on weight and booked alongside your own ticket, which makes it simple and often surprisingly economic for a suitcase or two beyond the free allowance. It arrives when you do, which nothing else on this page can claim.
Limits are strict and awkward shapes are refused. It suits clothes, books, kitchen basics and whatever packs flat. Movers and packers are not involved at all. It does not suit a lamp, a picture frame or anything you would grieve losing to airline handling.

The genuinely ambiguous band. A single room, or a student's belongings. Air freight if speed matters, shared container space if it does not. Worth having both priced because the gap is wider than people expect.
Shared container space or European road freight, handled by a moving company. Furniture is involved by this point, export wrapping matters, and the customs paperwork stops being a formality.
No household consignment carries paint, petrol, cylinders, aerosols or weedkiller, whichever method you pick. A courier refuses them as firmly as a removal crew does, and declaring them differently does not change that.
Customs applies too. Where the destination grants relief on used personal effects it generally wants the same things from a small consignment as from a container: ownership for a qualifying period, six months as a rule, and a genuine change of home.
Coming into Britain the relief is Transfer of Residence, claimed with HMRC on the ToR1 form before arrival. That applies to three cartons exactly as it applies to a house.
A courier will not take a wardrobe. Neither will excess baggage. The moment furniture enters the picture your consignment stops being a parcel job and becomes a removal, whatever the total volume looks like.
One or two pieces sit in an awkward band. A single armchair or a bookcase is too big for air freight to be sensible and too small to justify a container, which points at shared road or sea space.
Dismantling can shift you down a band. A bed and a wardrobe broken down may drop a load under the threshold where shared space starts working, and that is worth asking about before you assume the piece has to stay.

Almost never. Volumetric weight makes bulky items very expensive by air. The exception is a single piece of real value or urgency, and even then price replacing it at the destination first.
