Most cities let a removal vehicle drive in for nothing. Bath does not. The city centre has operated a Class C Clean Air Zone since March 2021, and a non-compliant heavy goods vehicle pays one hundred pounds for the day. That is a line on your quote before a single box has been carried, and it is the first thing that separates overseas removals here from overseas removals anywhere else in the West Country.
Add a World Heritage city built almost entirely of listed Georgian terraces on the sides of a valley, and you have three constraints stacked on top of each other: the charge, the frontage and the gradient. None of them makes an international move difficult. All of them make it a job that has to be priced with the facts in hand rather than estimated over the telephone.

Charges apply to non-compliant commercial vehicles only. Private cars and motorcycles pay nothing whatever their age. A removal lorry is a heavy goods vehicle, so the vehicle sent to your address matters financially as well as practically.
Georgian terraces around the Circus, Lansdown, Great Pulteney Street and Widcombe have railings, basement areas and residents parking rather than driveways. A suspended bay through the council takes working days to arrange, not hours.

An older lorry on a two day pack and load crosses midnight and incurs two charges. Get the answer in writing before you book, because recovering it afterwards is an argument nobody enjoys.
Bath sits between two motorways rather than on one. Junction 18 of the M4 is a short run north up the A46, and the M5 is reached west through Keynsham and the Bristol ring. Neither is far, and the road element of a Bath quote is modest by national standards.
Bristol Port, which is Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks, sits at junction 18 of the M5 and handles most container work leaving this part of the country. Southampton takes a share of the Australia and New Zealand sailings. Your mover picks on the schedule for your destination rather than on which port is nearer.
A forty foot container cannot reach most central Bath addresses and would be charged to enter the zone if it could. The normal answer is that goods leave by a smaller compliant vehicle and are packed into the container at a depot.
That changes nothing about the shipping or the paperwork. It does mean an extra handling stage, which is a packing question rather than a logistics one. Say yes to professional export wrapping on anything fragile.
Leaving the United Kingdom, the destination country decides what you may bring and what you pay. Most allow used personal effects in free of duty if you can show you have owned and used them for a set period, commonly six months, and that you are genuinely changing where you live.
Coming into the United Kingdom instead, the relief is Transfer of Residence and you apply to HMRC on the ToR1 form before your goods arrive. Processing takes weeks rather than days, and a late application leaves a container at a port accruing charges.
Either direction, the inventory does the work. Vague entries get queried. Around a city with this much period furniture in circulation, add one more check: items containing ivory, tortoiseshell or restricted timbers need documentation to leave and may be refused entry.
