How the journey works

The lorry collects from your UK address, crosses the Channel via the tunnel or a ferry and heads south through France. It crosses the Pyrenees into Spain and continues south down the east coast or through central Spain towards Andalucia. Estepona is at the western end of the Costa del Sol, which means the lorry has slightly further to travel within Spain compared to deliveries further east along the coast.

Lorry access in Estepona varies considerably. The Puerto Deportivo area and residential zones along the N-340 coastal road are well suited to full-sized removal lorries. The old town (Casco Antiguo) is a different matter. Its narrow streets mean a large lorry cannot reach many addresses without a shuttle transfer. Spanish registration and customs: what to sort and in what order

The registration steps below need to happen in sequence. Some take longer than people expect and getting the order wrong means goods arriving in Spain before the paperwork is ready, which creates customs delays and costs. Start the NIE before anything else.

1. NIE (Numero de Identificacion de Extranjero)
   Spain's tax identification number for foreign nationals. Without it you cannot open a Spanish bank account, sign a rental contract or property purchase, register a vehicle or access healthcare in Spain. Apply at the Spanish consulate in the UK before you travel. Processing takes 4 to 8 weeks. This is the first thing to sort, well before your removal date.
2. Transfer of Residence (ToR) customs relief
   Your household goods can enter Spain duty-free and VAT-free if you qualify. You must have lived outside Spain for at least 12 months, be establishing Spanish residence, and goods must arrive within 12 months of establishing that residence. Apply to the AEAT (Agencia Estatal de Administracion Tributaria) with your passport, NIE, proof of prior UK residence (a P60 or 12 months of utility bills), your Spanish rental or property contract and a numbered packing inventory. 3. Empadronamiento (address registration)
   Register your address at the Ayuntamiento (town hall) in Estepona within 3 months of arriving. Bring your passport, rental contract and your landlord's NIE or CIF number. The Empadronamiento certificate is needed for NIE renewal, healthcare registration, exchanging your UK driving licence and several other official processes.
4. TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero)
   UK nationals living in Spain post-Brexit need this residence card if staying more than 3 months. Apply within 3 months of arriving at the Extranjeria office or Comisaria de Policia in Estepona or the nearest office. You will need your passport, NIE, Empadronamiento certificate, proof of income or employment and two passport photos.
5. AEAT (Agencia Estatal de Administracion Tributaria)
   Spain's tax agency processes the Transfer of Residence customs application. Submit before goods arrive in Spain. It cannot be done retrospectively after goods have cleared customs.

Do I need my NIE before I book the removal?

Can a lorry reach my Estepona old town address?

The Casco Antiguo has narrow streets that make a full-sized removal lorry impractical for many addresses. The removal company usually arranges a smaller vehicle or a shuttle transfer from a nearby accessible point. Give your exact address when you enquire so access can be confirmed in advance. The Puerto Deportivo area and properties along the N-340 coastal road are much more accessible for large lorries.

Is my delivery address in Spain or Gibraltar?

Gibraltar is about 25 kilometres west of Estepona and is a British Overseas Territory with its own customs rules. If your address is in mainland Spain near La Linea de la Concepcion or Sotogrande, the removal is a standard UK to Spain process. If your address is actually within Gibraltar, the process is completely different and Transfer of Residence relief for Spain does not apply. Be clear about which side of the border you are moving to when you enquire.

When should I plan to move to Estepona from the UK?

Summer (June to August) is the busiest period for UK to Estepona moves and removal availability fills up quickly. If you are moving in summer, book several months ahead. Spring arrivals from March to May work well for settling in before the heat peaks.
