Sea freight is the cheapest way to move a large volume a long distance and the least understood part of an overseas move. This page explains the mechanics: what fills a container, which port your goods leave from and why, what happens between the quay and the vessel, and where the time actually goes.
This service covers international shipping only. Moving furniture from one Gloucestershire address to another is domestic removals work and needs a local firm and not an international moving company. Everything here concerns household goods leaving the country.
An international moving company controls the collection, the wrapping, the inventory and the freight booking. It does not control transhipment, port congestion or clearance speed.
A firm promising a delivery date rather than a range is promising something outside its power.
Loads leave from Gloucester, Cheltenham, the Stroud valleys, the Cotswold towns and the Forest of Dean. All of them join the M5, which runs the length of the county from junction 9 to junction 13.
A sole use container is loaded at your address, sealed there and taken directly to the port against a booked sailing. Nothing waits and nobody else's goods are involved. That is what the premium buys: a sailing date, not a collection window.
A shared load, written on paperwork as groupage or LCL, goes first to a consolidation warehouse where it is packed into a container with other households heading the same way. You pay only for the cubic metres you occupy, which below roughly fifteen is substantially cheaper.
The container sizes explain a quirk worth knowing. A twenty foot box holds around thirty three cubic metres and a forty foot around sixty seven. A load of thirty five cubic metres is therefore an awkward size, and trimming it below the smaller container's capacity can be worth real money.
A forty foot container cannot reach many properties in this county. Where it cannot, the load leaves by a smaller vehicle and is packed into the container at a depot instead. That changes nothing about the shipping and it must be agreed in advance rather than discovered on the morning.
Goods on a sea route are handled at both ports, spend weeks in motion and pass through temperature and humidity changes a domestic move never sees. Most policies require professional packing on fragile items for exactly that reason.
Bristol Port comprises Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks and sits at junction 18 of the M5, the same motorway that runs the length of Gloucestershire. There is no cross country leg. Royal Portbury handles the container work on a 600 metre quay with three gantry cranes, two of them post Panamax, taking vessels up to 14.5 metres arrival draft.
Around nine million tonnes pass through annually, with something near 46,000 containers among it, and calls itself the United Kingdom's most centrally placed container terminal.
Shipping lines run fixed services from fixed ports. If the operator handling your destination sails from Southampton, that is where your container goes, and the extra road hours cost less than waiting weeks for the next west coast departure. Felixstowe carries most Far East sailings.
This is why two quotes from Gloucestershire can route your goods in opposite directions and both be correct. It is not a mistake and it is not worth arguing about.
A quoted transit is a range instead of a date, and understanding why removes most of the frustration of the waiting period.
Some services move your container onto a larger vessel at another port before the ocean leg. Entirely routine, adds days and not weeks, and it is the main reason a transit is given as a window.
On a shared load the container waits to fill at this end and is broken down again at the other. Both add time. On a busy corridor that is days, on a thin route it can be a fortnight. Ask which yours is.
The genuinely variable part, and the only one you influence. A precise inventory clears quickly. A vague one gets queried. Containers carry a limited free period at the terminal before storage charges start, and those are yours.
Destination, rough volume and target month. We match you with one international removals company from the network that books the freight, lodges the documents and clears at the far end, and not a spread of international moving companies each handling a piece of it. Nothing to pay either way.
The bill of lading is the shipping line's document. It records what is carried, by whom, from where to where, and functions as title to the goods. Check your name and the destination address when it is issued, because correcting it afterwards is slow and sometimes charged.
The inventory you sign at collection becomes the customs declaration. Read it instead of signing to finish the day. Each destination has its own form: the United States wants Form 3299 with goods owned twelve months or more, Canada wants BSF186, and New Zealand scrutinises timber for boring insects. Vague entries such as boxed kitchen goods are the single most common cause of a shipment being held.
Leaving the United Kingdom, the destination decides what relief applies. Most countries allow used household goods in duty free if you have owned and used them for a set period, commonly six months, and are genuinely changing where you live.
Coming the other way, the relief is Transfer of Residence, applied for through HMRC on the ToR1 form before the goods arrive. It needs twelve consecutive months lived outside the UK and goods owned and used for six, and HMRC usually take one to two weeks. Apply early. Processing runs to weeks and a late application is the classic reason an inbound container sits accruing charges.
Everything is blanket wrapped, corner protected and strapped against the walls. Over six to twelve weeks it is friction, not impact, that ruins a polished face.
Heavy furniture loads first and lowest, forming the base tier with cartons built above. That order stops the load shifting when the box is craned at the terminal.
Bolts, pins and legs go into labelled bags taped to the piece they came from. A crew that skips that leaves you matching threads in a foreign hardware shop.
Ones with their own freight relationships instead of a broker found for the job. A search for international removal companies near me finds the collection side easily enough. An international removal company with standing agreements at the port and an agent at the destination is what makes the middle of the journey uneventful.
To an extent. Once you have the bill of lading number the vessel can usually be followed, though that tells you where the ship is and not when your goods will be released. Ask your coordinator rather than the shipping line, because your contract is with the mover.
Often, loaded in the same container as household goods, which is cheaper than a separate movement. Destination rules on age, emissions and drive side vary widely and some make it uneconomic. Decide before the container is planned, not after.
Eight to twelve weeks for a sole use container and a little longer for a shared load, because the box has to fill. Between June and September add more, as crews book out before container space does. Overseas removals are the whole scope of this page, start to finish. Overseas movers who ask about the lane before quoting have worked here before.
Port detail from The Bristol Port Company, covering Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks. Container capacities and freight terminology follow standard shipping industry usage. Transfer of Residence procedure from HMRC guidance. Transit times are planning ranges, not guarantees, and no prices are quoted. Checked and signed off September 2026, yearly thereafter. Sailing schedules, port free periods and clearance requirements change, the introduced mover checks what applies now and says so plainly. Read our Google reviews.
Ask whether the international movers handling your collection also employ the crew delivering at the far end. Wrapping the lot is available and priced as its own item. International movers and packers do the work. Destination country, rough volume and target month. An accredited international moving company handles the freight, the documents and the clearance.
