🏠 The returning residents concession, explained

What you can bring home duty-free

The Bahamas welcomes its people home with a customs concession for returning residents. If you're a Bahamian citizen or permanent resident who has lived abroad for at least 24 months and you're coming back to live, you can bring your used household and personal effects in free of customs duty up to a value of 10,000 dollars, plus one vehicle up to a value of 30,000 dollars. Approval comes from the Ministry of Finance, and the concession can be used once every five years.

It covers the things that make a home, furniture, appliances, kitchenware, clothing and personal belongings you've owned and used abroad, not goods bought new to sell. We connect you with one vetted partner who knows the process inside out.

📋 The paperwork, and how to apply

The documents you'll need

The concession is applied for, not automatic. You'll submit an application to Customs and the Ministry of Finance, with your passport, proof that you've lived abroad for at least 24 months, and a detailed inventory of what you're shipping. The bill of lading for your container and a customs declaration in Click2Clear complete the picture. Your vetted partner and a local broker prepare and lodge it, so the duty-free entry is approved before your goods are released.

Container shipping

Most home moves go in a shared or full container.

Car shipping

Bring one vehicle in under the concession.

UK home removals

Every island and service for the Bahamas.

📄 What falls outside the concession

Where duty may still apply

The concession covers used effects within the limits. Anything above the 10,000 dollar threshold, or a vehicle over 30,000 dollars, may attract duty on the excess, plus VAT at 10%, a 1% processing fee and the environmental levy on the landed value. New goods, or items clearly bought to sell, aren't covered. There are also conditions on the vehicle's year. Your partner and the broker tell you clearly what qualifies and what, if anything, is due, before you ship.

£ Currency exchange for moving home

Sorting the money side

Coming home usually means moving money too. The Bahamian dollar is held on par with the US dollar. For years we've connected customers with trusted partners who handle any currency, so the money side is simple. It's offered through our partners, with no hidden fees.

🚚 How it works, step by step

Coming home, step by step

  1. Tell us about your move. Share that you're a returning resident and what you're bringing, and we connect you with one vetted partner.
  2. Gather your proof. You'll need your passport, proof of at least 24 months abroad, and an inventory of your effects.
  3. Apply for the concession. Your partner and a broker lodge the application with Customs and the Ministry of Finance.
  4. Ship and clear. Your container sails, and the broker clears it in Click2Clear with the concession approved.
  5. Deliver home. Your effects, and any vehicle, are delivered to your address in the Bahamas.

Returning residents shipping to the Bahamas: common questions

A Bahamian citizen or permanent resident who has lived abroad for at least 24 months and is coming back to live. The concession is for genuine moves home, not visits. Your partner confirms whether you qualify.

Once every five years. It's designed for a genuine move home, so it can't be used repeatedly. Your partner and a broker confirm your eligibility before you ship.

The concession covers effects up to 10,000 dollars and a vehicle up to 30,000 dollars. Above that, duty may apply on the excess, plus VAT at 10% and fees. A broker works out anything due in advance.

Yes, one vehicle up to 30,000 dollars under the concession, subject to conditions including its year. The Bahamas drives on the left, so a UK car suits. See the car shipping page for how it ships.

It helps, but your partner and a broker can handle clearance with the right authority and paperwork in place. The concession must be approved before the goods are released.

Nassau or Freeport, depending on your island, then inter-island freight for the Family Islands. The concession is lodged with Customs and the Ministry of Finance either way.
