The sea route is the same one in reverse. Your container leaves a Canadian port and crosses the Atlantic to the UK. What changes is the paperwork. Going into Canada you deal with Canadian customs. Coming home you deal with HMRC, and the relief that matters is Transfer of Residence.
This is the Canada to the United Kingdom route. Most people making this move are returning Brits or Canadians settling in the UK. The shipping is straightforward. The part that catches people is timing the ToR1 application so your clearance is ready when the ship docks.

The first call is the container. Do you share it, or take the whole box?
A shared container, which movers call groupage or LCL, brings your things home alongside other people's. You pay for the space you use and nothing more. It's the cheapest way back, ideal for a flat, a studio or a few rooms. The downside is the wait, as it sails once it's full.
A full container, or FCL, is yours and yours alone, sealed in Canada and unsealed in the UK. A 20-foot box fits a two or three-bed home, a 40-foot a larger house. It costs more, but it moves faster and gets handled less along the way.
Stuck between them? A flat or a handful of rooms with loose dates leans shared. A full house, or a firm arrival date, leans towards your own box.

A full-service mover handles much more than the driving. You choose the level that fits your budget and how much you'd rather do yourself.
A full door-to-door service costs more, but you barely lift a finger. A part service trims the price if you'd rather pack yourself. Tell the mover which you'd like, so the quote fits the job.
Most of the wait is the crossing. The one thing to start early is the ToR1, so your clearance is ready when the ship lands.
All in, plan for 5 to 9 weeks. The sailing you can't rush. The paperwork you can, by applying early.
No one can quote a real figure without seeing what you're shipping. Still, it helps to understand what lifts or lowers the price before you ask.
Volume is the biggest factor. A clear-out before you quote can drop you a container size.
Sharing is cheaper for a small load. Your own box wins once you're near a full house.
East-coast ports are a shorter sail to the UK than Vancouver, which can show in the price.
Stairs, tight UK streets, packing, a car or storage all add to the bill. Flag them early.

Coming home, your customs is handled by HMRC. The relief to know is Transfer of Residence, applied for on the ToR1 form. Get it approved and your used belongings come in free of import VAT and duty. Skip it and HMRC can charge VAT and duty on the lot.
You apply online before your goods ship. If approved, HMRC sends a Unique Reference Number, or URN. You pass that to your mover, who quotes it to clear the container. Allow 2 to 6 weeks, and longer over the summer.
To qualify, you must have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months. You must also have owned and used the goods for at least six months. You bring them in within a year of arriving, and keep them for a year after. Alcohol, tobacco and brand-new items aren't covered.
Returning British citizens are not exempt. Citizenship doesn't waive customs, so you still apply for ToR1 and still meet the same conditions.
Your mover prepares the import side, but the ToR1 application is yours to make.
Containers from Canada clear at one of the main UK deep-sea ports. Your mover books the one that suits your shipment, then handles the road delivery.
