VerifiedGet matched with vetted international mover We match you with only accredited partner for your route: fewer calls, less stress, and a clearer quote.
Moving back to the UK from Portugal is one of the most common return routes we match. Whether you're a returning expat, someone wrapping up a long stay or a family relocating back to be near home, the logistics are the same. Your goods originally entered Portugal under the bagagem de mudança customs regime. Whether you're coming back from Lisbon, the Algarve, Porto, Funchal or rural Alentejo, it's a road move of roughly 1,440 to 1,760 miles depending on your Portuguese collection address, crossing into Spain, through France, and arriving in England via the Channel Tunnel or Brittany Ferries.
Two sets of customs apply since Brexit. On the Portuguese side, Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT) requires export documentation from the removal company. Your partner mover handles this. Goods originally entered Portugal under the bagagem de mudança regime. On the UK side, goods arriving from Portugal are treated as imports, and HMRC applies UK customs on arrival. For most returning residents, Transfer of Residence (ToR1) relief removes the UK import duty and VAT on personal belongings owned for at least six months. The ToR1 application is yours to make, to HMRC, before goods leave Portugal.
International Removals Companies connects Portugal-to-England enquiries with one suitable FIDI-certified partner mover free. Removal companies and moving companies covering this route hold FIDI FAIM, BAR Overseas, FEDEMAC and IAM accreditations where confirmed. You get one removal company, not five. They contact you directly, survey the move, confirm the quote and handle all documentation for both the Portuguese departure and the UK arrival.
International Removals Companies is a free enquiry matching service operated by DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD (company 07425576). It does not carry out removals. It connects each enquiry with one suitable vetted FIDI-certified partner mover. The partner mover contacts you directly and provides the quote.

From anywhere in Portugal, the removal lorry loads at your Portuguese address. Before departure, the removal company prepares the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT) export documentation required for goods leaving Portugal post-Brexit. This is commercial paperwork the partner moving company handles. You do not need to arrange it yourself.
The lorry heads north via the A1 or A3 motorway to the Spanish border. The crossing into Spain is at either Vilar Formoso (central route, used for Lisbon and central Portugal) or Valença (northern route, used for Porto, Braga and the Minho). From Spain the lorry has two main options. For most collections in northern Portugal, including Porto, Braga and Viana do Castelo, the Brittany Ferries sailing from Santander or Bilbao to Plymouth or Portsmouth is often quicker and avoids the full France drive. For Lisbon, Algarve and central Portugal, the Channel Tunnel route through France and across at Calais is more common. Your partner moving company confirms the best crossing based on your collection postcode and your UK delivery address.
Delivery covers England, Scotland and Wales. If you're moving back to Scotland or Wales rather than England, the logistics and customs process are identical. The only difference is the final road leg after the port. Your partner mover confirms delivery to your specific UK postcode as part of the survey.
On arrival at the UK port, customs clearance happens using the ToR1 Unique Reference Number you've already obtained from HMRC. The moving company presents this to the customs broker, goods are cleared, and the lorry delivers to your UK address.
Since January 2021, goods moving from Portugal to England are treated as imports into the UK. UK customs applies at the English port of entry. For most returning residents, Transfer of Residence (ToR1) relief removes the UK import duty and VAT that would otherwise apply. The relief is not automatic. You must apply before goods leave Portugal.
You must meet all three of these conditions:
Goods bought in the last 6 months, alcohol and tobacco are always excluded. Duty and VAT apply to these regardless.
The partner removal company handles commercial customs documentation and the inventory paperwork. They cannot provide legal or tax advice. Check official HMRC sources and confirm your eligibility before goods move. If your situation is complex, such as a short stay, recent purchases or multiple shipments, consider asking a customs agent before applying.
Access at the Portuguese collection address is the first practical issue to confirm. Properties in Lisbon's Alfama and Mouraria, Porto's Ribeira waterfront, Sintra village, Évora's walled old town and many rural quintas and herdades have restricted vehicle access. Narrow cobbled streets, low archways and track-only access may require a relay van. This is a smaller vehicle that transfers goods from the property to the main lorry parked on a wider road. This adds cost if not confirmed in advance, so flag it at the survey stage.
For Algarve properties, cliff-top villas or barrier island addresses such as Ilha de Tavira or Ilha da Armona need particular attention. Some barrier island properties have no vehicle road access at all. Goods must be transported by hand or small boat to the mainland. For rural Alentejo herdades, sand track access after winter rain can prevent lorry access entirely. Send photos of access routes, gate widths and track surfaces when you enquire.
These are rough planning guides only. The actual price depends on your Portuguese collection address, your English delivery address, total volume, access at both ends, move date, packing level and customs requirements. The partner mover confirms the actual price after a survey.

gov.uk. To qualify, you must have lived outside the UK for at least 12 months and owned the goods for at least six months. HMRC issues a Unique Reference Number which your removal company uses at the English port. Alcohol, tobacco and items bought in the last six months are excluded.
A dedicated vehicle takes 2 to 4 days. Lisbon to London is about 1,570 miles. Porto to London is around 1,440 miles. Faro or Lagos to London is about 1,760 miles. A part load, where your goods share a vehicle with other customers, takes 10 to 21 days as the lorry consolidates from multiple Portuguese addresses before heading north.
Yes, in most cases. Vehicles can travel inside the removal lorry alongside household goods. This gives better protection than an open transporter. Importing a vehicle into the UK from Portugal is a separate customs process from household goods. If you've owned the vehicle for at least six months and have lived outside the UK for at least 12 months, it may qualify for ToR1 vehicle relief under customs procedure code CPC 40 00 C33, which removes UK import duty and VAT. Vehicles registered in the EU and previously subject to EU VAT can qualify. Your partner mover's customs broker handles the vehicle declaration. Confirm at the survey stage, and provide the V5 equivalent and proof of ownership period. Not all removal lorries have internal dimensions for every vehicle, so flag this early.
From Portugal: a detailed inventory of all goods, your full UK delivery address, and your NIF (Portuguese tax number). For UK customs: your ToR1 Unique Reference Number from HMRC, proof of your Portuguese address (lease, utility bills, bank statements), and evidence of 12+ months residence in Portugal. List any goods excluded from ToR1 relief separately, such as items bought in the last six months, alcohol and tobacco.
The more detail you give upfront, the more accurate the quote. Here is what to gather before you submit your enquiry.
FIDI FAIM is the international quality standard for removal companies covering Portugal to England routes. To earn accreditation, a removal company must pass an independent audit by Ernst and Young covering more than 200 quality and operational criteria, repeated every three years. It covers insurance levels, staff training, vehicle maintenance, claims handling and customer service.
For a Portugal to England removal, FIDI accreditation means the removal company has documented UK customs procedures, verified insurance cover for the entire route, and a formal complaints process. International Removals Companies connects enquiries with one FIDI-certified removal company free. DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD, company 07425576, has operated the service since November 2010.
Many returning expats and people moving back to the UK from Portugal need storage at one or both ends, especially if there is a gap between leaving your Portuguese property and moving into your UK home. Your partner moving company can arrange storage in Portugal before the lorry departs, or UK storage on arrival if your delivery address isn't ready.
If you've left your Portuguese property but are not ready to move yet, or if the lorry cannot collect on your ideal date, your partner removal company can arrange secure storage in Portugal. Goods are packed and loaded, held securely, then moved when you're ready.
If your UK property is not ready when the lorry arrives, due to temporary accommodation, completion delays or renovation work, the partner moving company can hold goods in UK storage and deliver when you're ready. This is common for returning expats who need time to find a permanent home.
Send your Portuguese collection address, English delivery postcode, inventory, access details and preferred move date. One FIDI-certified partner mover confirms the quote, the Channel Tunnel or Brittany Ferries route, and the UK ToR1 customs documentation required.
