If your goods are stored in the Netherlands before Dutch customs clearance, they are held in bonded storage under Douane supervision. Goods remain in customs transit status until your partner mover files the vrijstelling voor verhuisboedel claim and the goods are released to your address. Your BSN (Burgerservicenummer) and Gemeente registration in the BRP are needed before clearance.
Since January 2021, the UK is outside the EU. All goods shipped from the UK to the Netherlands need Dutch customs clearance. The vrijstelling voor verhuisboedel exemption removes import duty and 21% BTW on goods you've owned for at least six months. You must import everything within twelve months of taking up residence. There is no strict time limit on container storage, but Dutch customs rules require goods to be imported within twelve months of taking up Dutch residency to qualify for the vrijstelling voor verhuisboedel exemption. After twelve months, you may lose the exemption and face import duty and 21% BTW.
Bonded storage is a secure warehouse approved by Dutch Customs (Douane) to hold goods in customs transit. Your goods are stored here after crossing into the Netherlands but before customs clearance is completed. They are secure, insured and under customs supervision.
