Removals to the Amalfi Coast: why the SS163 changes everything

Traslochi sulla Costiera Amalfitana dal Regno Unito

The Amalfi Coast is the most logistically complex destination in Italy for removals. No other region in this cluster requires as much advance planning, and no other destination has a physical access restriction that applies to every single delivery regardless of which town you are moving to. That restriction is the SS163, the coastal road known as the Amalfi Drive or Nastro d'Argento. A standard international removal lorry cannot drive on it. Not in summer, not in winter, not at night. The road is simply too narrow.

The SS163 runs 40 kilometres from Vietri sul Mare in the east to Positano in the west, hugging the cliff face above the Tyrrhenian Sea. In places it is 3.5 metres wide. It has tight hairpin bends that a lorry at 13.6 metres cannot complete. It crosses through tunnels barely wide enough for two passing cars. A 7.5-tonne panel van can navigate it. A standard removal lorry cannot.

The practical consequence is that every removal to the Amalfi Coast involves a vehicle transfer. Goods travel from the UK to Salerno or Vietri sul Mare by standard lorry. At the staging point, the load is transferred to one or more smaller vehicles for the coast road delivery. For some properties in Positano and other cliff-face towns, the road access itself stops well short of the front door, and goods go the final distance by staircase, porter or hoist.

International Removals Companies is a free enquiry matching service operated by DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD (company 07425576). It does not carry out removals or operate vehicles. It connects each Amalfi Coast enquiry with one suitable vetted partner removal company, who contacts you, surveys the move and confirms the quote. Free to use, no obligation until you accept.

How removals work for each main Amalfi Coast destination

The serpentine SS163 Amalfi Drive showing the narrow road width and cliff-face location

Positano

Positano is built almost vertically on a cliff face above the sea. The SS163 passes through the upper part of the town and two small roads descend to the lower levels. A ZTL zone with camera enforcement controls all vehicle access to these descending roads. Below the road level, properties are connected by staircases only. No vehicles reach the lower Positano fishermen's quarter, the Mulini area or most clifftop properties.

Delivery method: small van to the ZTL access point, then by hand-cart and porter down the staircases. For heavy items, a hydraulic hoist or purpose-built davit mounted to the delivery vehicle can lower goods to a balcony or window above a staircase. This must be pre-arranged and costed at the survey stage.

Amalfi and Atrani

Amalfi town is the road junction where the SS163 meets the road up to Ravello. The town has a ZTL zone. The historic centre around the Piazza del Duomo is pedestrianised and no vehicles reach it. The residential streets above and beside the cathedral square are served by small vehicles only. Atrani, the smallest commune in Italy, is immediately east of Amalfi and is almost entirely accessible on foot from the beach piazza. Small van delivery to the nearest road, then porter access to the address.

Amalfi is the staging town for Ravello deliveries. Goods from the transfer vehicle here continue up the 7-kilometre single-track road to Ravello by a smaller local vehicle.

Ravello

Ravello sits at 365 metres on a ridge above Amalfi. The approach road from Amalfi is 7 kilometres long, single-track in sections, with hairpin bends that exclude standard lorries. A small van can reach Ravello. The village itself has narrow stone lanes and a ZTL zone. The villa gardens and historic centre streets require porter access from the nearest vehicle stopping point.

Delivery method: small van from Amalfi to Ravello village centre, then porter carry or hand-cart to the specific address. For very heavy items, a small crane lorry based locally may be an option. Confirm at the survey stage.

Praiano, Furore, Conca dei Marini, Cetara

These smaller coast towns each sit directly on or above the SS163. Properties in the upper parts of these towns are accessible by small van from the coast road. Properties built into the cliff below the road are staircase-only in some sections. Cetara at the eastern end of the coast is slightly more accessible than Positano. Furore has its famous fjord settlement below the road level, accessible by steep steps only.

For all these towns: provide the property address in full, confirm whether it is above or below the SS163, and note the staircase count if known. The partner mover uses this to determine vehicle type and whether porter support is needed.

Vietri sul Mare and Maiori

Vietri sul Mare is at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast, where the SS163 meets the A3 motorway. This is the usual staging point for the transfer from the main removal lorry to coast road vehicles. Maiori has the widest beach on the Amalfi Coast and relatively straightforward access for a small van. Properties in the upper residential areas of Maiori are accessible by vehicle. These two towns are the most practical Amalfi Coast destinations for standard removal planning.

For Vietri and Maiori, costs are lower than Positano or Ravello because staircase and porter logistics are less likely to apply.

The Salerno staging point

Salerno is the main city immediately east of the Amalfi Coast, with excellent motorway access from the A3. For most Amalfi Coast removals, Salerno is where the main removal lorry from the UK parks, and the goods are transferred to smaller vehicles for the coastal delivery leg.

A storage facility in Salerno can also be useful if the coast delivery must happen on a specific day (due to ZTL permit timing or staircase team availability). The partner mover coordinates this as part of the overall Amalfi Coast route plan.

📄 Customs for removals to the Amalfi Coast

UK customs and the transfer of residence exemption for the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is part of Campania, Italy, and the EU. Since Brexit, UK goods arriving here are treated as imports to the EU. The franchigia per trasferimento di residenza (transfer of residence exemption) can remove import duty and 22% Italian VAT on household goods you have personally owned and used for at least six months before the move, provided you are moving your main home to the Amalfi Coast. You need a Codice Fiscale to apply. Get this in advance at agenziaentrate.gov.it or the Italian Consulate in London. Allow two to four weeks. Check current rules at dogane.gov.it and gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/italy.

Timing the delivery: Amalfi Coast ZTL permits, porter availability and hoist hire all need to be booked on a specific date. The partner removal company coordinates this from the Salerno transfer point. Give at least two to three weeks' notice for a coast delivery to ensure the permit and local resources align.

Amalfi Coast customs checklist

  • Apply for Codice Fiscale at agenziaentrate.gov.it (free, 2 to 4 weeks).
  • Check franchigia rules at dogane.gov.it.
  • Confirm goods owned and used for 6 or more months.
  • Establish Italian residency before goods arrive.
  • Provide full property address with town, road name, floor level and staircase count.
  • Confirm whether your property is above or below the SS163.
  • Read gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/italy before goods leave the UK.
Amalfi Coast removals questions

Questions about removals to the Amalfi Coast from the UK

Can a removal lorry drive on the Amalfi Coast road?

No. The SS163 Amalfi Drive is restricted to vehicles under a defined size and weight for most of its 40-kilometre length. The road is in places 3.5 metres wide with tight hairpin bends. Standard international removal lorries cannot safely navigate it. Goods arriving by road to the Amalfi Coast travel to Salerno or Vietri sul Mare, where they are transferred to smaller vehicles for the final delivery along the coast road.

How are removals to Positano actually delivered?

Positano is built on a near-vertical cliff face. The SS163 passes through the upper town and a ZTL zone controls vehicle entry to the descending roads. Below road level, properties are connected by staircases only. Goods are delivered by small van to the ZTL access point, then carried down by hand-cart and professional local porters. For heavy items, a hydraulic hoist can lower goods from road level to a balcony or window. This must be pre-arranged at the survey stage.

How do removals to Ravello work?

Ravello sits 365 metres above sea level on a ridge above Amalfi. The approach road is 7 kilometres long, single-track in sections, with hairpin bends that exclude standard lorries. A small van can reach Ravello village. The historic centre has narrow lanes and a ZTL zone. Goods go the final distance by porter carry or hand-cart. For very heavy items, a small locally-based crane lorry may be an option. Confirm at the survey stage.

How long do removals to the Amalfi Coast take?

A dedicated vehicle from the UK to the Amalfi Coast staging point at Salerno takes 6 to 8 working days. The local transfer to the coast delivery address adds a further day. For part load services the total transit is typically 14 to 20 days from collection, subject to the departure schedule. The local transfer vehicle booking must be coordinated with the coastal ZTL permit, so scheduling the final delivery day in advance is particularly important for Amalfi Coast moves.

How much do removals to the Amalfi Coast cost?

As a planning guide, a part load to the Amalfi Coast starts from around £1,800 for a studio. A two-bedroom part load from around £3,500. A dedicated vehicle from around £4,500. The small-vehicle transfer from Salerno, crane or hoist hire for Positano cliff-face properties, and porter charges for staircase access all add to the cost for specific addresses. These are planning guides only. The partner removal company confirms the actual price after reviewing the delivery address access in full.

What customs rules apply to removals to the Amalfi Coast from the UK?

The Amalfi Coast is part of Campania, Italy, and the EU. Since Brexit, UK goods entering Italy are treated as imports to the EU. The franchigia per trasferimento di residenza (transfer of residence exemption) can remove import duty and 22% Italian VAT on household goods owned and used for at least six months, provided you are moving your main home to the Amalfi Coast. You need a Codice Fiscale to apply. Check dogane.gov.it for current rules.
