📤 Route from Portugal to Ireland

Portugal to Ireland household removals

Portugal is at the south-western tip of Europe, which makes it one of the longer drives to an Irish Sea port. Despite the distance, Portugal to Ireland is an active route, driven by returning Irish families from the Algarve and tech-sector moves from Lisbon and Porto. Two main route options carry moves from Portugal to the Republic of Ireland, and your mover confirms which best fits your origin city.

Via Bilbao: direct to Rosslare

The van drives from Portugal through Spain to Bilbao, then Brittany Ferries to Rosslare Europort. About 26 hours at sea.

Keeps goods inside the EU throughout. No UK transit procedure. Lisbon to Bilbao is about 8 to 9 hours by road. Best for most Portuguese moves. Lands in County Wexford.

UK land bridge

The van drives from Portugal through Spain and France, across England and Wales to Holyhead or Pembroke, then the Irish Sea ferry to Dublin Port or Rosslare.

A UK transit customs procedure applies. Longer total route but sometimes used for shared loads where consolidation points in France or the UK suit the schedule.

For Lisbon and Porto, the Bilbao direct ferry is the most practical route. It avoids UK transit paperwork and keeps goods inside the EU the whole way. The Algarve is one of the most common origins for a Portugal-to-Ireland move, driven by returning Irish families. Porto and Lisbon generate regular tech-sector moves to Dublin. Groupage from Portugal is well established and shared loads are usually good value on this route.

🚢 Three steps to a quote

How to get an international removals quote

Step 1

Send your details and access notes

List your rooms or items. Add the Portugal collection address, the Irish delivery address with Eircode, floor level, lift, stairs, parking, preferred date and photos of large pieces.

Step 2

One certified mover reviews it

One FIDI-certified partner mover checks the volume, route, vehicle size, customs documentation and access at both ends. We connect you with one mover, not a shortlist of firms.

Step 3

Get the price and decide

The mover contacts you with a firm price, transit time, packing options, insurance and the customs plan. You decide whether to book. No charge, no obligation.

💷 Cost guide

International removals cost: Portugal to Ireland

Use these as planning guides, not quotes. The firm price comes from the mover after they see your items, addresses and access. Volume, route and Irish delivery area are the main variables.

Small load or single items

A few boxes or one or two pieces of furniture

From about €900 to €2,500

Price varies with Portuguese origin city and Irish delivery area.

Part load (a few rooms)

Studio to two-bed on a shared van

From about €2,200 to €5,000

Transit 2 to 4 weeks. Portugal is one of the longer European routes.

Dedicated vehicle (full house)

Sole use from Portugal to your Irish address

From about €5,000

Lisbon to Dublin typically 4 to 5 days via Bilbao.

Specialist or complex

Antiques, artwork or island delivery

Priced after survey

Condition reports and specialist crating usually needed.

Rural Irish deliveries with narrow lanes or long driveways typically add £150 to £400. Stairs without a lift add crew time at both ends.

🚢 Arriving in Ireland: the final leg

From the Irish port to your door

Most moves land at Dublin Port or Rosslare Europort in County Wexford. From there, the van drives to your Irish delivery address. Dublin Port is the arrival point for the Holyhead to Dublin crossing, run by Irish Ferries and Stena Line. Rosslare is the arrival point for crossings from Pembroke, Fishguard and the direct continental sailings from Cherbourg and Bilbao.

Dublin Port suits deliveries to Dublin, the east, the midlands and the north-west. Rosslare suits Wexford, Waterford, Cork and the south. For a far-west delivery to Galway, Mayo or Donegal, the mover adds road time from whichever port the load arrives at.

Irish VAT is 23% on most goods, but Transfer of Residence relief, claimed on Form C&E 1076 via Revenue, removes import duty and VAT on used personal belongings when you genuinely move your home to Ireland. The Common Travel Area covers people, not goods, so it does not affect the customs position for your belongings. Your mover files the customs documents; your eligibility for the relief is yours to confirm with Revenue.

Always give an Eircode for the delivery address. An Eircode is the Irish postcode, a seven-character code unique to each address. Much of rural Ireland uses townland names rather than street numbers, so the Eircode is how the mover finds your door.

📄 Customs guide

Customs for a move from Portugal to Ireland

Portugal and Ireland are both in the EU. This is an intra-EU move, so no customs duties apply to used personal belongings moving between EU member states. You do not need a Transfer of Residence claim in the same way a UK-origin move requires.

You still need a full inventory of your goods, and you should register with Revenue and get your PPS number promptly after arriving in Ireland. The PPS number is your Irish tax and identity reference. You will need it for banking, employment and most official matters.

If the route uses the UK land bridge, a UK transit customs procedure applies while goods pass through Great Britain. This does not create an import charge in Ireland. Your mover advises on the best route and handles the transit documents.

Note: the partner mover handles all shipment and transit documents. Your PPS number and Revenue registration are yours to arrange on arrival.
Access and delivery checks

Access checks that affect every Ireland quote

Most quote surprises come from access, not distance. A move may travel smoothly from Portugal to the Irish port, but the final delivery is harder if stairs, lifts, parking or a narrow village street were not confirmed first. Give these details when you enquire and the price will be accurate.

Collection checks (Portugal)
  • Can large items be dismantled and rebuilt?
  • Do items fit through doors and stairwells?
  • Lift size: width, depth and weight limit
  • Parking or loading bay near the door
  • Carry distance from door to van
  • Any building entry time limits
Irish delivery checks
  • Flat, house or rural townland address?
  • Georgian terrace or medieval street access?
  • Eircode for the exact delivery location
  • Lift size for an upper floor
  • Street width for a removal van
  • Parking suspension needed in a city?
  • Gate, lane or driveway width
What to include in your enquiry
  • Full Portugal collection address
  • Full Irish delivery address with Eircode
  • Room list or inventory with rough sizes
  • Photos of large, fragile or awkward pieces
  • Floor level, lift, stairs and parking at both ends
  • Preferred date and how flexible it is
  • Whether storage is needed before delivery
  • Any dismantling, reassembly or packing needs

Common questions

International removals from Portugal to Ireland: common questions

How do household goods travel from Portugal to Ireland?

Most moves use the Bilbao route: the van drives from Portugal through Spain to Bilbao, then takes the Brittany Ferries sailing to Rosslare Europort in County Wexford (about 26 hours). This keeps goods inside the EU throughout. The alternative is the UK land bridge, driving through France to a Welsh port and the Irish Sea ferry, which adds road distance and UK transit customs.

Do I pay customs duties moving from Portugal to Ireland?

No. Portugal and Ireland are both in the EU, so no customs duties apply to personal belongings on an intra-EU move. If the route goes via the UK land bridge, a UK transit procedure applies in transit, but this does not create an import charge in Ireland.

How long does a move from Portugal to Ireland take?

A dedicated vehicle from Lisbon via Bilbao can deliver to Dublin in about 4 to 5 days. A shared load takes about 2 to 4 weeks from collection. Portugal is one of the longer European routes to Ireland because of the road distance to Bilbao.

How much does a move from Portugal to Ireland cost?

A small shared load starts from about 900 to 2,500 euros as a rough guide. A part load of a few rooms runs from about 2,200 to 5,000 euros. A dedicated vehicle starts from about 5,000 euros. The firm price depends on volume, the Portuguese city, route and access.

Is the Bilbao to Rosslare ferry the best route from Portugal to Ireland?

For most Portuguese moves, yes. It is a direct intra-EU crossing with no UK transit customs paperwork. Lisbon to Bilbao is about 8 to 9 hours by road. The ferry lands at Rosslare in the south-east. If your Irish delivery is Dublin or further north, the mover assesses whether the total route time justifies the land bridge alternative.

Do I need a PPS number for a move from Portugal to Ireland?

Not to complete the move itself, but you will need a PPS number for almost all official matters in Ireland after arrival, including Revenue registration, banking and employment. Apply at your local Intreo centre as soon as you arrive.

Can I ship a car from Portugal to Ireland?

Yes. The car can travel on the same ferry as the household goods. VRT, Vehicle Registration Tax, applies on registration in Ireland at a rate based on CO2 emissions. Check revenue.ie for current rates before moving the car.

Is the enquiry and matching service free?

Yes. International Removals Companies, operated by DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD (company 07425576), connects your enquiry with one FIDI-certified partner mover for the Portugal to Ireland route. The partner mover contacts you with the price, route and transit time. Portugal to Ireland is an active route served by regular Bilbao-to-Rosslare sailings, and shared loads from Lisbon and Porto are well established. Free, no obligation.

What should I send when I enquire about a move from Portugal to Ireland?

Send the Portuguese collection address, the Irish delivery address with Eircode, a room list or inventory, photos of large pieces, floor level, lift and parking at both ends, your preferred date and whether you need packing. The Eircode is especially important for rural Irish deliveries.
