Edinburgh has a port at Leith that no European ferry now uses

Edinburgh has a working harbour at Leith and a ferry terminal at Rosyth twenty minutes away. Neither will move your furniture towards Greece. Scotland has had no roll-on, roll-off sailing to the continent since the Rosyth service closed in April 2018.

So an Edinburgh move runs south by road like a Glasgow one, and the international leg begins in England. A Rosyth to Dunkirk route has been discussed for several years. Until it carries freight, treat any quote that assumes a Scottish sailing as a mistake.

Stairs decide the vehicle before the route does

Much of central Edinburgh is tenement stock: shared stairs, no lift, and streets that a full-size lorry cannot work. The practical answer is a shuttle, a smaller vehicle running between your flat and the main load. It is normal, it is not free, and a quote given without knowing your floor is a guess.

Say which floor you are on and whether there is a lift when you send your details. It changes the crew size and the time on site more than the distance to Greece does.

Mention at enquiry

  • Floor, and whether there is a lift
  • Whether a lorry can stop outside
  • Any parking permit or controlled zone
Then south, then Greece

What the Scottish leg actually adds

Driver hours, mostly. Edinburgh to the Channel is a long day, which usually means an overnight before the international leg starts. On a shared load that matters less, because your goods are consolidated in England and wait there anyway. The same applies from the west.

At the far end, ask for Thessaloniki if your Greek address is northern. Islands need a second sailing. Currency exchange can be arranged alongside through the specialists we work with.

Edinburgh to Greece questions

What people ask about moving from Edinburgh to Greece

Answers sit open on the page rather than behind dropdowns.

Can I ship from Leith or Rosyth?

Not to Greece. Leith handles commercial and cruise traffic with no scheduled roll-on, roll-off service to the continent, and Rosyth lost its European sailing in April 2018. Loads leave Scotland by road.

Is a Rosyth to Dunkirk ferry coming back?

It has been discussed for several years and is not running. If a quote assumes a Scottish sailing to Europe, ask the company to name the operator and the sailing day.

Does Edinburgh cost more than Glasgow for a Greek move?

Not materially. Both run south by road and the difference between them is small against the length of the whole journey. What does change the figure is access at the collection address.

What about tenement access in the New Town and Old Town?

It matters more than the mileage. Stair access, no lift, and streets that will not take a full-size vehicle all mean a shuttle at the collection end. Say which floor you are on when you send your details.

Do you cover Fife, the Lothians and the Borders?

Yes. The routing is the same from anywhere in eastern Scotland: south by road, then across from an English port. Put the collection postcode on the form so the domestic leg is priced properly.
