Moving crews handle the drive, but the relief application is yours

The lorry does the same journey in reverse. The paperwork does not. Going out to the Czech Republic you rely on an EU regulation. Coming home you apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence relief, and you apply before your belongings arrive rather than after.

That timing is the whole point of this page. People who have moved abroad once assume the return leg mirrors the outbound one, submit nothing, and discover at the border that relief is not something you claim retrospectively over the phone.

Everything else is familiar. Collection anywhere in the Czech Republic, overland through Germany, the Channel by ferry or tunnel, delivery to a British address. No sea leg, no container, usually one vehicle throughout.

📋 Transfer of Residence relief

Apply first, ship second

Transfer of Residence relief allows personal belongings to enter Great Britain without duty and import VAT when you are moving your home here. You apply to HMRC, you receive a reference, and your removal company quotes that reference on the import entry.

The order matters. The reference has to exist before the goods present themselves at the border. Current guidance and the application itself sit on GOV.UK, and it is worth reading the qualifying conditions yourself rather than taking a mover's summary of them.

Have ready before you apply

  • Evidence of where you have been living in the Czech Republic, and for how long.
  • Evidence of the British address you are moving to.
  • A detailed inventory of what is coming, which you need anyway.
  • Details of any vehicle travelling with the household, which is treated separately.

Leave time. This is not a same week process, and the vehicle booking should follow the application rather than race it.

🚫 What Britain will not let in

Restrictions that surprise people

British import rules are stricter than EU internal rules in several places, and the gaps catch households rather than businesses.

  • Food and plant material. Store cupboard contents, preserves and houseplants. Assume they stay unless you have checked.
  • Anything with a firearms component, including deactivated pieces, antiques and inherited items. This needs sorting well in advance.
  • Ivory, including small decorative inlay on furniture and instruments.
  • Alcohol and tobacco, which travel but are dutiable.

Your removal company will have its own refusal list covering aerosols, paint, fuel and gas bottles. Ask for it before loading day rather than on it.

Clearing a property rather than moving home

A good share of Czech to UK jobs are not somebody relocating. They are an executor emptying a flat after a death, an owner selling a second property, or a family shipping inherited furniture back.

Relief schemes are written around a person transferring their own home, so an estate clearance may sit outside them entirely. That is not a disaster, it is a different declaration, and it only becomes a problem if nobody says so.

Moving companies handling estate work declare it correctly when they are told. Tell the moving company plainly what the job is. A firm that knows it is clearing a property declares it correctly. A firm told it is a house move will assume relief applies and put your name on that assumption.

🚚 Collection and the drive

Where the vehicle comes from matters here too

Collection is available across the country, but the frequency of vehicles heading to Britain varies. Prague, Brno and the Ostrava area see the most traffic, so shared space fills soonest. Quieter regions mean a longer wait on a part load, or a stronger case for sole use of a vehicle.

Give the town and the street rather than the nearest large city, and mention access at the Czech end: stairwell, lift, permit zone. Central Prague addresses need the same planning going out as coming in. See Prague removals for what that involves.

Removal companies covering this journey run it regularly in both directions, so an international moving quote should already price the return leg properly rather than treating it as an unusual request. Ask what the removal service includes at the British end.

On the British side, give the delivery postcode and say whether the property is ready. Waiting time with a crew on the clock is chargeable, and the sum is worse than storing for a week.

Questions people ask about the return journey

Is the paperwork the same coming back?

No, and this is the thing people get wrong. Going out you rely on Council Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009, an EU scheme. Coming into Britain you apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence relief. Different authority, different application, and it works on a different timetable.

When do I apply for Transfer of Residence relief?

Before your belongings arrive, not after. That is the single most important sentence on this page. You submit the application to HMRC and receive a reference which your mover quotes on the import entry. Leaving it until the goods are at the border is how people end up paying duty on their own furniture.

What can I not bring into Britain?

British customs restrict things the EU does not, and the categories that catch movers are food and plant material, anything with a firearms component including deactivated or antique pieces, and anything containing ivory. Check the current rules before you pack rather than at the port.

I am clearing a property after a sale or a death. Is that different?

Practically, yes. Relief schemes are built around a person moving their own home, and an estate clearance may not fit that shape. Say plainly what the job is when you enquire. A moving company that knows it is clearing a property will declare the entry correctly and will not assume relief applies.

How long does the journey take?

It is the same overland drive in reverse: across the Czech Republic, through Germany and France or Belgium, then the Channel by ferry or tunnel. Sole use of a vehicle drives straight through. Shared space waits until the lorry is full. Ask for both windows in writing.

Can the mover collect from a small Czech town?

Usually yes, though the frequency of vehicles heading to Britain varies by region. Prague, Brno and Ostrava see the most traffic. Quieter parts of the country may mean a longer wait for shared space. Give the town and street rather than the nearest city.
