🌍 Shipping the other way, Bahamas to the UK

The service runs both ways

Most of what we do is moves to the Bahamas, but plenty of people move the other way, back to the UK after years on the islands, students heading over to study, or families sending belongings to relatives. The shipping idea is the same, just reversed: your goods are packed and loaded in the Bahamas, sail from Nassau or Freeport, and clear customs at a UK port such as Southampton, Tilbury or Felixstowe. What changes is the customs at the UK end, and that's where it pays to have a partner who knows the rules.

📋 UK customs and Transfer of Residence relief

Bringing your home into the UK

If you're moving your normal home to the UK, you may claim Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, which lets you bring used household goods and personal belongings in free of UK import duty and VAT. The main conditions: you've lived outside the UK for at least 12 months, you've owned and used the goods for at least 6 months, and they're for your own use, not for sale. The catch is timing: you apply to HMRC with a ToR1 form and must have the approval reference before your goods reach the UK, as customs won't release them without it. You'll also need an inventory and the bill of lading. If you're only sending gifts, that's not a transfer of residence, so UK import VAT, currently 20%, and any duty may apply. Your partner and a UK customs agent guide you through it.

From your Bahamas address to a UK port

Your vetted partner packs and protects your goods at your address, loads a shared or full container, and books a sailing from Nassau or Freeport. Allow roughly four to six weeks for the crossing, usually transhipped, plus packing before and UK clearance after. Once it lands and clears, your goods are delivered to your UK address, with furniture reassembled. Weighing up the move? Start from the Bahamas hub.

Shipping to the UK, step by step

  1. Tell us about your move. Send one short enquiry with what you're moving and we connect you with one vetted partner.
  2. Apply for ToR early. If you're moving home, start the HMRC Transfer of Residence application early, as approval takes time.
  3. Pack and load. Your partner packs and protects your goods and loads the container at Nassau or Freeport.
  4. Sail and clear in the UK. The container sails to a UK port, and a customs agent clears it with your ToR reference.
  5. Deliver in the UK. Your goods are delivered to your UK address and furniture is reassembled.
