Mykonos Chora was built as a maze and takes no vehicles

The old town was laid out deliberately to confuse raiders, and it still works. The lanes are narrow, they turn back on themselves, and vehicle access is effectively nil. A delivery into Chora is a carry, and sometimes a long one.

Add the transhipment through Piraeus that every Cycladic island needs, and Mykonos becomes one of the more demanding addresses in Greece to deliver to.

Household goods being delivered to a property on Mykonos
🚢 Transhipped, like the rest of the Cyclades

Two sea legs, not one

Goods reach Piraeus, are unloaded, and travel on by island sailing to the new port at Tourlos. That second leg has its own schedule and its own space constraints, and in summer it competes with very heavy passenger traffic. How transhipment works.

🏖 Getting to the door

Where overseas removals stop and the carry begins

Outside Chora the island is manageable: Ornos, Platis Gialos and the inland villages take a small lorry, though the lanes narrow quickly. Inside Chora, plan on everything being carried from wherever the van can stop, which may be several hundred metres away.

Crews price that properly when they know about it and badly when they do not.

Chora addresses

  • Steps, and how many
  • Time of year, which changes everything here
📋 Season and paperwork

Avoid July and August if you possibly can

Mykonos in high season is the hardest delivery window in the Cyclades: ferry space is scarce, the town is impassable and crews are stretched. Spring and autumn are a different island entirely. Clearance itself happens at Piraeus before the island leg. What relief requires.

Mykonos moving questions

What people ask about moving to Mykonos

Answers sit open on the page rather than behind dropdowns.

Does Mykonos need a transhipment?

Yes. Like the rest of the Cyclades, goods clear at Piraeus and travel on by island sailing to Tourlos. That second leg has its own schedule and its own space limits.

Can a vehicle reach my house in Chora?

Almost certainly not. The old town was built as a maze and is effectively pedestrian. Expect everything to be carried from wherever the van can stop, which may be a long way.

How much does the Chora carry add?

It depends on distance and steps, which is why crews ask. A hundred metres and a flight of steps is very different from three hundred metres and several. Measure it before you enquire.

Is the rest of the island easier?

Considerably. Ornos, Platis Gialos and the inland villages take a small lorry, though lanes narrow quickly. It is Chora specifically that is difficult.

When is the worst time to move here?

July and August, without much competition for the title. Ferry space is scarce, the town is impassable and crews are stretched. Spring and autumn are far easier.

Is Mykonos more expensive than other islands?

Generally yes, because of the transhipment, the carry and the season. It is a genuine cost rather than a premium, which is why comparing like with like matters.

Can you collect from Mykonos?

Yes. Return moves and property clearances run the same way in reverse, with the carry at the collection end instead. Describe the access when you enquire.
