Rhodes Old Town sits inside walls no removals lorry can pass

The medieval town is a walled UNESCO site with gates built for carts. Vehicle access inside is restricted and the streets are cobbled and narrow. If your address is inside the walls, the last part of the delivery is done by hand or by a very small vehicle.

Everywhere else on the island is straightforward by comparison, and Rhodes has the advantage of its own commercial port, so goods do not have to be transhipped through the Cyclades.

A port of its own

Rhodes is not a transhipment island

Unlike Naxos, Paros or Santorini, Rhodes takes commercial traffic directly. That removes a handling stage and a scheduling risk, and it is the main reason a Rhodes quote can be closer to a mainland one than the map suggests. How the transhipped islands differ.

🏘 Inside the walls, and outside

Two very different deliveries on one island

An address in Ixia, Faliraki or Lindos is a normal island delivery. An address inside the Old Town is a different job: restricted vehicle access, cobbles, and a carry that can be substantial. Crews price the two differently and they are right to.

Say which one applies when you enquire, and if it is inside the walls, say how far from the nearest gate.

Old Town addresses

  • Distance from the nearest gate
  • Whether the street takes any vehicle at all
  • Steps between the street and the door
📋 The paperwork side

Clearance, and then the carry

Customs is dealt with at the arrival port and does not change because the address is medieval. Relief depends on transferring your home. What changes on Rhodes is the time and the crew at the far end, so build that into the day rather than the paperwork.

Rhodes moving questions

What people ask about moving to Rhodes

Answers sit open on the page rather than behind dropdowns.

Does Rhodes need a transhipment?

No, and that is its main advantage over the Cyclades. Rhodes takes commercial traffic directly, which removes a handling stage and a scheduling risk that Naxos, Paros and Santorini all carry.

Can a lorry deliver inside the Old Town?

Not a full-size one. The medieval town is walled with restricted vehicle access and narrow cobbled streets. Expect a small vehicle to a gate and a carry from there, and say how far the door is from the nearest gate.

Is Rhodes much dearer than the mainland?

Less than most islands, because there is no transhipment. The gap widens if your address is inside the walls, since the delivery itself takes far longer.

What about Lindos and the coastal resorts?

Normal island deliveries in most cases. Lindos village itself has its own access limits on the upper streets, so mention the exact address rather than the resort name.

Where does customs clearance happen?

At the arrival port, before delivery. Nothing about an Old Town address changes what Greek customs requires; it changes the time and the crew at the far end.

Can you collect from Rhodes too?

Yes. Return moves and property clearances run the same way in reverse. Access at the collection end matters just as much, so describe it when you enquire.
