In short: Student moves are usually small, so a part load is the cheapest way to get your things to Germany. You pay only for the space you use, sharing a vehicle with other shipments. University cities such as Heidelberg, Munich, Berlin and Freiburg see peak demand around the September and October intake.
You register your address (Anmeldung) within 14 days of arriving, which you will need for enrolment, a bank account and often your visa or residence permit. The enquiry is free.
Most students are not moving a household, just clothes, books, a few boxes and maybe a bike. A part load is made for that: you share a vehicle and pay only for your space, which keeps the cost right down. Think about what is worth shipping versus buying cheaply once you arrive. Bulky, low-value items are often not worth the freight. Timing matters too: September and October are busy with the main intake, so booking early, or moving off-peak, can save money.
One piece of German admin matters more than any other for students: Anmeldung, registering your address at the local Bürgeramt within 14 days of moving in. The confirmation letter, the Anmeldebestätigung, is needed for enrolment, opening a bank account, and often your visa or residence permit.
Book the appointment as early as you can, because slots in the big university cities fill quickly around the start of term.
If you are coming from the UK, your used personal belongings can usually enter Germany duty-free under Transfer of Residence rules, since Brexit means UK moves need customs clearance. If you are moving from another EU country, there is no customs step at all.

Moving between the UK and Germany means switching between pounds and euros. German landlords normally ask for a deposit of two to three months' cold rent (Kaltmiete) in euros before they hand over the keys, and that is usually the first large euro payment you will make. International moving companies price by cubic metre, not by room count or weight. A sparsely furnished three bed house can cost less than a heavily furnished two bed flat. Reducing volume before the survey is the most effective way to lower the figure.
Ground floor with parking outside is straightforward. A fourth floor German apartment with no lift, restricted parking and a narrow stairwell may need an external furniture lift. Describe access honestly at survey stage so it is priced in rather than discovered on the day.
June to August is peak season across the European moving industry, and prices rise while availability tightens. October to March is materially cheaper. Month-end and Friday collections are busier than mid-week, mid-month slots.
